1148.0. "Acadia Nat. Park/Bar Harbor 9/21-24/89" by ENGINE::PAULHUS (Chris @ MLO6B-2/T13 dtn 223-6871) Thu May 04 1989 14:59

I'm organizing a weekend at Acadia National Park/Bar Harbor
area for the local (E. Mass) bike club, the Nashoba Valley Pedalers.
Since the response has been adequate, but not mob scene type
overwhelming, I think I can open it up to my DEC cycling friends:
I went up there to check things out last September. The places
that I talked to had had bad experiences with previous groups
(reserving space for X people, X/3 people show up type thing) so
they would only deal with individuals. So, each person who goes
must make their own reservations/arrangements. I have gathered info
on an inexpensive guest house in Bar Harbor and a family style (all
rooms have double bed(s)) farm/inn more suitable for couples. There
is also available from the Bar Harbor C of C, a listing of many,
many other possibilities. I have put together an info sheet with
addresses, etc. To get one, send your name and mail stop to me.

The schedule is arrive either Thursday or Friday. Friday is
an unstructured day - I'm going to rent an ATB and try the carriage
roads in the Nat. Park. Saturday I'll lead a 40 miler around the
west (less traffic) half of the island. Saturday night dinner at
Mama DiMatteo's Italian Restaurant. Sunday is open for more riding
and travel. Join us? - Chris

Darn! I forgot to mention: The area has become more popular
during the post-summer season (the town use to close Labor Day)
with the retired people in their Winnebagos, etc. So, the places
recommend making reservations by July 1 at the latest, maybe by
Memorial Day. That's why I posted this note so far in advance of
    the trip. - Chris

There is a `famous' race around ACADIA right around that time every
year (Tour D'Acadia) I doubt they've announced the date yet, but
some racing buffs might enjoy watching, or entering. It's usually
on a Sunday, and goes along rt 2, (starts and ends in Bar Harbor)

It's a 28 (+/-) mile course with some fairly decent climbs on it.

1148.3Do it!!! It's a great place!TOOK::R_WOODBURYwhy silver bullets!?!? ...Tue May 23 1989 20:5912
Acadia is one of my favorite places to go. The carriage paths have a
lot to offer. There are few places where mountains, ocean, lakes,
beaches, fiords, and lobster are in such close proximity, and none, I
wager, where they are all so accessible by bike. There is even a major
tourist town (Bar Harbor), if you're into that.

I have gone to Acadia the past two years in late September. It is a
great time to go, and the rates generally are lower after the 15th, as
was mentioned in .0. My wife and I have our own "secret" place that we
    go to in Bass Harbor.

Well, anyone who considered going, and then didn't - well you all
missed an absolutely fantastic weekend. Even if Chris decided
to go on the scheduled ride before I finally showed up.

Hugo decided that he didn't want to visit Acadia, so while it was
raining here in Mass - which other people told me that it did -
we were under bright sunny skies on Mt. Desert Island.

Once again, I want to thank Chris for arranging such a beautiful
    weekend.
