1106.0. "Boston's bike ban - your wheels could be impounded" by ULTRA::BURGESS () Thu Apr 13 1989 16:42

	No more bikes (roller skates, or skate boards) in Boston's
downtown crossing area - wherever THAT is.

Does this apply to riding the bike, or to walking the bike.

1106.2its really not much of a lossCNTROL::GANDARAThu Apr 13 1989 18:459

    its not that great a place to ride anyway, bikes get stolen all
    the time, I hate riding on cobble bricks, and its impossible to
    carry all the bargins back from filenes basement.

    Besides theres a lot of people all over the place.

	Dunno, the radio announcement didn't say - Laws don't follow
common sense very often, so it might be unwise to assume that this one
applies only to riding... If the rationale for passing it was
"mumbledeespeak_all_them_bikes_and_skateboards_cluttering_up_the
_sidewalks_are_dangerous, people_could_trip_on_them"   then you could
be in trouble for walking it.

          `Walking it' is the only way it's allowed there.....that is
    the way I heard it this morning on the way in to work. You must
    get off, walk it thru the entire area, and then ride away.....or
    you might be subject to a $ 20. dollar fine, impoundment or both.

            Like someone else said, no loss `tho....you wouldn't want
    to ride there anyways...a Filene's bag might blow into your spokes....

    Then again, somebody has to catch you. I wonder what the relative
    speed of a cyclist is vs. the average Boston Patrolman... Besides,
    don't they have to break off high speed chases these days ? (8-)

    re .5

    the average patrolman is on horseback in the downtown crossing

    its the brown stuff you have to watch out for.
