1105.0. "GETTING MEDICAL" by WMOIS::C_GIROUARD () Thu Apr 13 1989 10:54

I recently did a TT (last Tuesday as a matter of fact) and developed
some congestion. This was not unusual (for me) because the temp
was around 35 degrees and when I exert myself in that kind of weather
I usually experience some (temporary) congestion.

The surprise I had was when I woke up the next day, I was still
congested. Still am today but it's clearing up well.

Anyone deal with this on intense cold weather rides? I did dress
well, but I didn't wear a face/head cover, just the 'ole hard
    shell.

Maybe it's just a little cold I pushed over the edge.

I almost always get 'congested' after doing a TT. Last night I did
the Wayside Inn TT; it was about 50 degrees out (chilly), and right
after, and still today, I have the Uhhhh UUUmmmmm's (trying to
clear my throat). All last night i was wheezing when I took a deep
breath. This happens almost always when I go hard in a TT, even
in warmer weather. It usually lasts a day. I have no idea why this
happens, as I don't have a cold or allergies or asthma.

I also get congested after hard rides when it is cold out,
although my lungs usually clear within a few hours.
The condition is called "exercize induced asthma".

Oh boy, I've got a brand new condition I didn't know had a name, and
it's even a TLA! What could be more perfect!

I simply call it "chapped throat".

That happened to me in March, 1987, in England. Damp and chilly.
By the end of May (still in England), this had developed into
some perverse combination of lung-congestion and allergy (since
it was, of course, still damp and chilly, but in addition everything
    was in bloom).

I had to take medicine, pills, and a rest. Fortunately, that is
when my down-tube cracked, and put a dent in mileage for a couple
of weeks. That probably saved me.

Lesson learned: a trip to Tucson or Morocco might not have been
a bad idea. Don't let the thing take root!

Thanks a lot. I feel better (misery love company). It's almost cleared.
In fact, I rode yesterday (intervals) with no breathing problems
or any additional aggravation. At least I feel normal.

     Thanks Again,
