1064.0. "Corporate Cycling Challenge" by MCIS2::DELORIEA (Common sense isn't) Thu Mar 23 1989 12:55

In the April issue of "BICYCLING" magazine there was an add for a Corporate
Cycling Challenge. Its a 12 mile team time trial race. It'll be held in

Princeton, NJ - June 11,1989
Palo Alto, CA - July 9, 1989
Irvine, CA - August 13,1989
Boston, MA - September 17,1989

Also on the same day there is a 1000 meter individual time trial for kids
ages 10-15. There will be scouts there looking for future champs.

For more info call 800-922-4626 (in CA 415-368-9700)

There is a $200 dollar fee for the team race and $12 for the kids.

I call the local employee activities person and she said there is NO DIGITAL
sponcership. Although we can use the company name. So if there is anyone
interested in having jerseys made or how to go about using DIGITAL's name I
have the coporate contacts needed to OK it.

I saw this too, and am somewhat interested. Did you call them, and could you
post more info? I believe it was 4 person teams. At $200, that $50 per
rider. That's pretty steep... what does one get for it?

I imagine there might be a number of riders in New England interested in the
Boston event. Can more than one team be entered? If not, how would we go
about selecting a team, assuming more than 4 riders wanted to do it? Have
tryouts?

Kevin

ps. Are there age groups?

Ya, BUT... IF (big if) enough of the monies are going to charity then
(according to a community relations person) then we pay half.
I talked with the person at the 800 number and he said that SOME of the monies
are going towards charity(not yet chosen).

Yes, more than one team can be entered into this event.

>>ps. Are there age groups?

No, but there are 12 catagories one for each type of company. Also there are
two divisions, 1 is two or more woman, 2 is three or more men.

You get a medallion and a T-shirt for entering. I'll be getting a couple of
packages of material. I'll forward them to interested TEAM Leaders.

I'll post any info when I get it.

I am VERY interested in getting one of those DIGITAL jerseys made.

Though I cannot enter the time trial ( impossible to afford $50 plus air ! ),
I'd like to have one. Let me know if you decide to make some.

people in the neighborhood (southern England) who would be very
interested in a Digital jersey. Me, for example. Think of the
advertising value; I do 50 km. to work and back. Perhaps we could
get Digital to pay us on a mileage basis for the commercials. 8')

I was out doing some spring skiing thats why I didn't reply earlier.
I can have DIGITAL bike jerseys made!!! It's just a matter of money.
How much do you want to spend? I was thinking aroung $30 a piece, for
colored COOLMAX three pocket shirts, with the logo on the front and back.
What else do we want on the shirts??? What color??? Do I have enough people
that will buy them, so I won't get stuck???

This is my idea of the jersey.

COOLMAX (or some other washable fabric)
Gray sleeves and side pannels
White front and back

1064.11Those Official Bike Club T-Shirts?EAGLE1::CAMILLIMon Apr 03 1989 17:0921
I would assume Ed is talking about the bike club T-shirts
from when the bike club last actually met. (Kathy N., are
there STILL some left?) I pulled one out of my desk and will
	try to describe it.

On the front (sort-of where a pocket would be) is a lower-case
"dec" with spokes in the "d" and the "c". The "d" also has
a little flag (as a quarter-note) to represent handlebars,
and, above the "c", what looks like a seat.

On the back is the familiar "digital in little boxes" logo
(without the "TM"!) near the top (centered left/right),
two bicyclists silhouetted in the middle, and "Bicycle Club"
	below.

If you want, I'll try to photocopy the shirt and send it
	interoffice...

Kathy, who did the graphics for those things and how? Is
there a "master silkscreen" floating around somewhere?

OH YA, Those baseball shirt excuses of a bike club jersey ;^)

I don't know what happened to mine, can you send me a copy. We can
probably use the dec bike part.

What else sould we have on the jersey? How about covering the jersey
with a wild, bit map paint scheme ;^)

	Or...DIGITAL Bytes Club... No, I don't think so... ;^)
The company that I called already does work for DEC so they have the
logo screens made, so it shouldn't cost AS much as a cold start.

Unfortunately, you can't legally make jerseys with the DIGITAL
logo on them. DIGITAL closes guards the use of their logo.
They only allow it on approved articles.

How do you get approved? You have a club, with officers, regular
meetings, and events. You collect dues, and stay together for
a reasonable period of time. Then DEC will consider giving you
permission to use the logo on club members' clothing.

There's a special employee activities organization that manages
all this. I can't remember the name of the person, but if
you look at the note called TEAM DIGITAL very early in this
conference, you can track down all this junk again.

I would like the jersey to be European pro-team looking with the "official"

DIGITAL logos. I mean the ierseys to look like team jerseys rather than

club jerseys. Those are for TTT, right ? Am I going to the wrong direction ?

Anyway, whatever the jerseys will look like, I want one. Small.

I don't mind paying $30 + shipping ( and even handling ).

I was talking to the LICENSED Digital vendor yesterday, this is the poop...

The jerseys are going to be three pocket BIKE jerseys made out of a cycling
fabric. I hope to get a nice two color jersey with the logo on the front and
back with BIKE CLUB or something like that. He is going to get back to me on
the price (I told him I want to keep it around $30-$40). He'll get me the
samples and if all goes well the jerseys will be ready by the end of May.

When I get more info I'll post it. Also, when we're READY TO ORDER I'll make up
an order form and send it out to those who want to order a jersey. They'll be
at cost.

I was hoping for some input...
1064.19I like blue and whiteIAMOK::WESTERTue Apr 04 1989 15:3312
RE.18, I'll add my .02. How about Blue and white? Isn't that
usually the color scheme DEC uses with their logo in advertisements
and on TV? Blue and white still won't knock your socks off in these
days of pastels and neon, but it's a bit more color than grey and
white. Maybe a fade from blue to white or vice versa?

If the distributor has different fabrics, how about choosing COOLMAX
or WICKTEC or some other good high tech low sweat fabric?

I also like the idea of DEC on the shoulder or upper sleeve.

1064.32Apple ComputerVERVE::BUCHANANBatMon Apr 10 1989 16:1314
I rode the first of the major/official centuries this past weekend, the Tierra
Bella (more on the ride later) and saw at least 20 people with Apple Computer
jerseys. They were very nice. I think few would argue that Apple has one of
the best and most unique coprorate logos. The design was very simple, white
jersey made of nylon/lycra or polyester with the Apple logo, the rainbow apple
with the bite out of it, on the front and back and with "Apple" and each side.
I would suggest something as simple for our jerseys as well. I would also
that we not say Digital "Cycling Club" since we really aren't a club.

The ride was tough! Temperatures in the mid to upper 90's. Only a fool would
opt for the 200 km route. But then I'm nothing if not a fool! They shut off
registration at 2000 riders and said that they could have had 3000 if they
didn't. Nice route, good support and food, tough hills and windy flats and the
furnace-like heat. This weekend the Primaverra Century in Livermore.

and other details. I will be meeting with the vendor tomorrow!!

He carries HIND clothing, so they will be good material. To keep the price down
I think we'll have to just go with the digital logo on the front, back and
shoulders. ( They already have the screens made up)

I'll put out a vote on the choices of colors, prices and styles tomorrow.

After seeing the quick response I decided to call the vendor and tell him
we were going with the first choice. He called belwether and then called me
back with the bad news... The one he and I picked out was a womens jersey,
not unisex (the large was smaller than a mens med.) Well that still left
choice 2. Called HIND and there so back ordered that they can't fill our order
until the next total eclipse. So now I'm in the process of trying to find a
cycling jersey manufacturer that doesn't have graphics or a stupid color
scheme. I don't want to settle for a bland single color jersey just yet.

We will get a jersey made one way or another.

I'll get some other, CHECKED OUT FIRST, choices and put up for a vote again.

WE'LL NOT BE DEFEATED

Thanks for all the replies

Well here's one option. The Performance Desert Jersey $19.95 with (cotton/poly)
the logo screened on add another $5.00. I have one of these jerseys and they
are great. It washes in the machine and comes out soft. They are two color
jerseys, white on the front and back with royal blue sleeves and accent stripe
down the sides. Not a bad price either.

I called they have over a hundred in each size in stock, SO if we got the ball
rolling we could have these jerseys in a week after the cut off for ordering.
Thats silk screened and everything.

OR, we can go with a more expensive company NIKE, TREK , Descente, and even
have BILL RODGERS Co. make up some from scratch for around $40

So do we want better or does this fit the bill.

I looked in the Performance catalog last night to see the jersey and I didn't
care much for it either, but on the same page they have a solid color jersey
made of nylon/lycra for about $25. Comes in white, red or blue. Anyone have
one of these? Performance opened a retail store near here so maybe that would
be an excuse to go check it out.

I met the guy who owns Aussie a couple years ago. He married one of my wife's
best friends sister. Met him at a wedding. It was a Saturday night wedding
and I met him the night before and asked if he wanted to ride with me on
Saturday (he had his bike of course). But since I wasn't a racer he opted to
go with a local store team. He must have underestimated No Cal rider and they
pounded him for about 75 miles on a hot day. He didn't do too much dancing at
the reception that night.

What is the difference between silk-screening and dying? With silk screen does
the design just go on top? Can you dye a jersey whoes original color is other
than white?

I was looking for something and I came across a nashbar catalog,
so I figured that I'd look to see if there were any promissing jerseys
    in it.

Two look interesting, a polypropylene jersey with different color
body and sides (I'd recomend white/navy). The price is $21.95,
but that has been crossed out and $17.90 (limited) has been written
underneath it. Since this is the early spring catalog, we may not
be able to get them at the reduced price.

The other is a polyester/cotton jersey, available in red, blue,
white or yellow and goes for $22.90. It's sort of your basic jersey.

Maybe if we do something for them (the company) they'll do something for us.
It seems like we (the royal 'we' here) often expect support, sponsorship,
whatever, for nothing in return, or with little proof that we're worth the
effort. The DEC running club used to get a lot of support (I've no idea what
support they get now, in this era of tightened budgets) and they've always
been quite active in getting DEC's logo spread around by participating in
every corporate event they can find. Unfortunately, there aren't many events
of that type for cyclists. (And that's what this note was all about in the
first place).

The point is, if we want support from the company, we'll have to get organized
and very active in corporate events, even if that means helping create them
ourselves.

And besides, I'm PROUD of the company I work for and am quite happy to
advertise that fact.

Kevin... ask not what your company can do for you, but ask what YOU can do for
your company (and maybe it will return the favor). Paraphrased from JFK.

FINALLY!!!

We got a company that will make the jersey. "Schnaubelt Shorts" in PA. They
will make the jerseys and do the INKING<- note not screening. They will be made
with the new sublimation printing. That means no cracked and pealing letters.
The cost will be $42.00. The color scheme will be like the team 7-Eleven
jersey, only not green and red, but blue. They'll be white jerseys with blue
shoulders and blue on the stomach, white and blue sleeves. The logo will be on
the front, back, sides and sleeves. They will be made out of COOLMAX. These
will be really top of the line jerseys, and they'll last a long time.

The price does NOT include shipping. In the continental U.S.A add $2.50
Outside the states I think you would want them sent with an EXPRESS company.
Its up to you though. The prices vary so tell me when you order them how you
want it sent, find out how much it'll cost and add it to your order.

I will not place an order until the monies have been received, so over seas
send your order in air mail or express.

Once the order is in they'll only take 4-6 weeks to make up.

If you are interested and what an order form send me VAXmail and I'll Vmail one
out to you. Give me an idea of how many you're interested in also.

The size runs will be in the order form.

I would like to compete in the ATT Challenge.

In order to put in a good showing for Digital maybe we should consider
getting organized. Based on experience from involvement in corporate ski
challenges where Digital has done very well it appears to me that at
least some of the things we should do are: find at least 32 riders,
recruit 8+ ladies, organize teams and alternates, and arrange try-outs
and team practices. Perhaps we need a (oh no not another) committee of
volunteers to do the organizing and make the decisions.
