1049.0. "Share your BEST software here" by ICBB::JSMITH (I Bike Solo II) Fri Mar 17 1989 11:50

Up until a couple of months ago I was using a DATATRIEVE hack
to keep track of my training rides. Simple time, distance avg.
speed stuff in addition to comments on route, which bike, weather,
etc. Since DTR isn't available on this system, I was wondering
if anyone out there has an .EXE of some similar routine that they
would like to share with us less fortunate individuals. I also
understand that there a lot of stuff for PC's "BIKER, GEAR, etc."
available and wondered if anyone has used them and would recommend
their use by other noters. Thanks in advance for your help.

Have your system manager install DATATRIEVE?

    Does it use Rdb also?

Jerry,

I use a spreadsheet on my PC to do similar stuff. The calculations are
quite easy to do. Most spreadsheet programs either contain graphics or can
hook into a graph package, for displaying your data in neat, understandable
graphs.

The package I use is called Lucid 3-D, which has the relatively unique
feature of linking spreadsheets together for summarization purposes. I have 3
levels of spreadsheets:

Top level is year-to-year comparisons with a column for total weekly miles,
Total weekly time, and average weekly speed, all for each year I've kept
records. This data comes from the 2nd level.

2nd level is a daily summary for the year, with daily totals for distance
and avg speed and weekly total dist, avg speed, avg weight and avg sleep.
(I'd have avg resting pulse if my good heartrage monitor wasn't broken 8^( )
This sheet also has monthly and year-to-date totals. This data comes from the
3rd level.

3rd level contains all kinds of daily detail data. All data entry occurs
here, with the data automatically flowing upwards to the higher level sheets.
I generate graphs off of the top level sheet. I can already see interesting
trends of this year, compared to last year. I'll probaby add some monthly
totals to the top level so that I can easily graph that.

I think its great (but of course, I AM a card-carrying techo-dweeb!)

re. .1
System mgr. doesn't want to install CDD (we don't do RDB) on our
uVAX since we'll be migrating (as in turtle) to a larger system in
about 3 weeks. I have an account on a system at ZK that has DTR
access, but can't see using it for personal stuff so I'm open for
    suggestions in the interim.

re. .2

    >Total weekly time, and average weekly speed, all for each year I've kept

Yes this is what I'm after.

Getting a little more detail than I wanted.

    > I think its great (but of course, I AM a card-carrying techo-dweeb!)

Is it possible for the non-card-carrying techo-dweebs (did I
say that ?) to do somthing like this in a spreadsheet like DECalc
    and/or DECgraph?

But, of course!

I'll try to remember to print out a page or two of my sheets and give them to
you next time I see you at a GSW ride. No promises tho (you don't want me to
be any later than I usually am, do you?)

Kevin

ps. I don't think DECalc can do the linking stuff, but the rest any
spreadsheet can do. (did you know that DTR can do graphs, too?)

In my group only Techno Dweebs are allowed to even
look at graphic terminals. I was thinking along the
lines of ANSI graphs using ------ and oooooo. Neat
huh. You should see my histograms :-) Thanks for
the help.......what's everyone else using? I'll bet
if we took a pole we'd find that almost everyone that
rides a bike and works for DEC keeps some kind of
record on their system. Wonder if we'll get any closet
    DECmate users to fess up?

Good Lord! I've got so many bicycling programs that I've forgotten
about some of them. Some of them are:

Calculating watts required, given: weight, speed, gradiant

Calculating endurance (healthy male from Whitt & Wilson) given
          above.

Recalculating route milages given new starting point

Gearing (complete with little pictures of chainwheels, freewheel
cogs, etc) solving for ratio, or cadance, or mph with outputs of
log axis charts of ratios and gear chart.

Route average speed calculation (solve for min. to arrive at
turns given mileage, speed to average).

Unfortunately, all this is on a $700 Atari ST (about equal to VAX
750 in computing power) with lots of graphics, etc that are a real
chore (GKS and stuff) on a VAX. Haven't got anything on VAX. - Chris

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am selling an ATARI 1040ST
1 MEG of RAM
Internal disk drive,
Color monitor,
Panasonic Dot-Matrix printer with a really convincing letter quality mode.
Mouse,
Mouse pad

2 Years old, I bought it at Bit Bucket in Newton.
Runs great
comes with All original software and manuals :
	BASIC
	LOGO
	PAINT PROGRAM
	1st WORD word processor

all for $800 (Bit Bucket in Newton sells this package as of 3/19/89 for ~$1200)

For $200, you can also get the following :

Some books on the Atari,
Bunch of software magazines (START & COMPUTE) including disks of software
worth over $100,
a game called Speed Buggy worth $30,
** Marck Williams C the latest version, bought 3 months ago, worth $170
never filled out the warranty we could get one and fill it out in the
   buyers name.
Blank disks and a nice Big disk holder

Computer package and all software I will sell together for $900
I will not sell the software seperatey before I sell the computer, because
if no one purchases the computer I will keep it.

    contact only !!
OZONE::GOULD
DTN 297-4959
prefer mail, but can call if you like.
Will not be around this week,
but can make an appointment to see next week
anytime after work between 5:30 and 7:00 in Natick MA.
If you are considering buying an Atari spend time at the store finding
all about it and what it can do. Then come to me to buy.

I will be happy to demo, explain, show whatever...
But I am not interested in convincing you to buy an ATARI over some other
computer like a Macintosh or IBM. It is a great computer, works great !!
Just like the Macintosh, but I think better.
I am thinking about purchasing a MEGA ST computer, kind of a step up from the
1040ST. But a lot more money.

The price is kind of firm unless you can convince me that it is unreasonable.
Please only serious inquiries.

It is tough purchasing a computer with no warranty.
But It works GREAT !! never had any chip problems,
the disk drive was replaced last year due to some problems,
the new one works great.
If you purchase the computer, I will give you 5 days, if anything major goes
wrong you can have your money back provided you did not abuse it, put a disk
in backwards, drop it or something like that. That is the best I can do
for a warranty.

Thanks,

Dave

1049.10DECalc able to LINKBTO::LADUEFri Mar 24 1989 16:175
DECalc can do the linking that JSmith is talking about. I don't
personaly use the linking function (the function is actualy called
LINK) for the DECalc grid that I use for biking stats but the
scenario that he is describing is doable in DECalc.

1049.11Examples desperately neededICBB::JSMITHI Bike Solo IIFri Mar 24 1989 20:3010
Can you let us know where we can get an example. I've been
able to get everything in but, linking now seems to be the
problem......I still like DTR32. Once the file is there
you can extract reprots by bike, month, day, anything you
can sort on and the data entry function is a lot easier to...
not that I'm opposed to learning a new way of doing things.
Guess I should have invested the $800 in the Atari instead
    of the Colnago :-)
