| Flying the bike out isn't prohibitive. Last I checked the airlines
charged $20 each way, except that they forget to charge me about a
third of the time. Renting a bike might cost almost as much.

| I flew my bicycle round trip to San Diego over Christmas. I checked
both Continental and United. They both charge $30 one way for a bike.
You are responsible for packing the bike too. They don't have boxes
any more. It was worth it to me as I like to have my own bike along.

| I've had the same problem. I've been going to Colorado Springs
for 3-4 days just about every month since fall. Initially I
thought I would bring my bike in but that never worked out due
to people I was travelling with and other hassles. I did spend
a bunch of time one day trying to find a shop that rented road
bikes and was completely unsuccessful. A number of places rent
mountain bikes if that is what you are after (I have no idea
what the quality would be). If you are flying into Denver maybe
you'd have better luck trying to rent there and they driving
yourself out to Colorado Springs, I haven't tried that one yet.
I don't know what bike rentals go for but if you don't have to
pay rental on a bike bag flying it out and back might be cheaper
anyway...
Good luck. And post a reply if you find a shop that rents "real"
bikes.

The trick when you go to Colorado Springs is to write "US NATIONAL
CYCLING TEAM" on the outside of the box with the bike. The airlines
very seldom will charge you the $30.

| I really like the answer in .4... However, I'm 'premateurely' gray,
and I don't think I'd be believed if I claimed National Cycling
Team membership. I didn't mention in the base note that I'm a roadie.
I'll only be there over 1 weekend, so I don't really want to
bite the bullet for $60 in plane fare pluus the price of the box
for 1 weekend's riding. That's why I asked about rental.
FWIW, the L.A.W magazine I got just yesterday had an article
on flying your bike, complete with airline-by-airline breakdown.
Looks like I'd do better if I was flying internationally!

| How much is rental on a mountain bike in "the Springs"? I'll
be out there at the end of this month, and for two weeks in June.
Are there any trails/parks to ride in? (what about the Garden of
the Gods?)?

| I think this will help:
There is only 1 place that I know of in town which rents road bikes:
KETU Cycles 5937 Delmonico 719-598-7988 $18 a day
They say they have only a couple road bikes which they rent.
This cycle shop is about 3 blocks from the CXO1,CXO2, CXO3 (CSC) facilities.
The following places rent Mountain bikes:
Most places in town rent mountain bikes for around $15 to $20 a day.
KETU Cycles
Moutain Tour Cycles (also Bicycle Rental Company ) 1900 E. San Rafael

Team Telecycle 740 E. Hwy 24 Woodland Park, Co 687-6165
As one who rides both road and mountain bikes, you may want to try the
mountain bikes. They're loads of mountain trails around here and
they are a lot of fun.
Areas to ride (Road Bike):
Garden of the Gods - about 8 miles of road, very hilly
** US Air Force Academy - could ride many, many miles here. In 1986
during the World Cycling Championships, the
road course was on the Academy. Watch out
for the deer though.
USAFA,I25,Monument,Palmer Lake - You can ride through the Air
Force Academy from south to north and then there is a bicycle path
along side Interstate 25 north to a small community called
Monument. Just north west of Monument is Palmer Lake, a little
town up against the front range mountains. This is a very popular
route. About 30-40 miles round trip depending on where you start.
BLACK FOREST - There is an area north of Colorado Springs called
the Black Forest. You can take hwy 83 north to this area and then
ride east for 10 or so miles and then come back. This is a
forested area and a local century ride is held in this area.
Talk to any cycle shop in town and they can give you directions to these
places. Better yet, if you are going to the CSC for training, contact
Bob Smith. He is a network support specialist and President of the
Colorado Springs Cycling Club (WATNEY::R_SMITH).
Areas to ride (Mountain Bike):
Rampart Reservor - 13 mile trail around the lake. There is a small
community just 18 miles west of CS called Woodland Park. This lake is
about 8 miles northeast of this town.
Palmer Trail (SECTION 16) - A little harder to find, but a fun ride.
This trail begins close to an area called Bear Creek Park off a road
called HIGH RD. The trail climbs from about 6500 ft to over 9000 to
the top of a private residential area called Crystal Park. Its about
10 miles 'round trip.
Garden of the GODS - There are horse/hiking trails around this park,
HOWEVER, they are OFF LIMITS to mountain bikes.
Pikes Peak - Barr Trail - This is a trail which starts in Manitou
Springs and goes up Barr Trail to the top of Pikes Peak (14,000+ ft).
Barr Camp is located about 7 miles up the trail and would be a good
stopping place. This trail starts about 6800 ft and goes all the way
up Pikes Peak. Barr Camp is located at about 10,000 ft.

Anyone interested in getting together 6/30 or 7/1? I'm just about on
the plane now. I am lugging pedals and shoes for road or off-road.
Hope I can find a rental or kind person with two bikes :-)! I'll check

looking at the July calendar.
You are welcome to join me for a ride today or tomorrow. I plan on a distance
of about 40 miles both days. The rides will be road rides and you are welcome
to ride my spare bike, a 58 CM Cannondale.

| Hi Mark! Long time no see! A major surprise is that I'll be flying
out to Colorado on Friday (7/3) for 10 days for vacation. These $39 air
fares are really something! Next week I'll be trying to rent a bike
to get in some miles and get used to the altitude again. (I'm really
going to miss my *own* bike)
I want to get out during the daytime for a bit of riding. If anyone
knows of an organized ride, wants to join in for a ride, or suggest
places to ride, feel free to send me mail at NCDEL::LITASI or call
dtn: 442-2026. Oh, I'm a B rider in Minnesota on my bike...who knows
what that translates to in Colorado on a rental bike!
