984.0. "Ever hear of Bertoni bicycles?" by ESKIMO::DESHARNAIS () Wed Feb 01 1989 16:04

	The August 1988 issue of Bicycling magazine contained an
	article called "Sprint Finishers", which reviewed 3 affordable
	racing bikes. Among these bikes was the Bertoni Nuovitalia
	from Italy. This bike is made of Columbus chrome-moly tubing,
	Ofmega crankset, resin aero levers, and Shimano 600EX shift
	components.  Suggested retail is $585.00.

	Is anyone familiar with this make of bike? Any opinions on its
	quality, performance, value, etc?

	Thanks,
	Denis

984.1A friend likes his BertoniMARKER::WARDWed Feb 01 1989 18:286
    A friend of mine has one and likes it very much. He knows a lot
    about bicycles, so that means a lot.

    He feels that it climbs hills a lot better than his old Lotus!

    I bought a Bertoni Professional last year and I love it!
    It was a previous year's left over and price was very
    good. Other bikes with the same frame material and group
    where way out of my price range.

    I'd never heard of Bertoni before, so when the salesman
    suggested it, I was a bit cautious.

    After a bit of checking, here in Notes and elsewhere, I
    learned that the Bertoni name was invented by the same
    man who brought us Univega. He contracts the labor out
    to reputable bicycle builders. The high end Bertoni's
    are Italian made, mid-range are Japanese.

    I'm not real sure about the Nuovitalia, but I know that my
    bike was built at the same Bianchi shop in Italy the Bianchi
    Mondiale is built. I'm sure the Japanese builder is of comp-
    erable quality.

    All the frame specs are set by Bertoni and I find them to be
    very comfortable.

    If you like the bike, buy it - by no means should you let the
    name stand in the way.
