896.0. "Patchless Bicycle Tube Repair Kit" by GENRAL::WISHART () Mon Oct 10 1988 13:53

I just ran onto a new product over the weekend that might be of
some use. It's called a Patchless Bicycle Tube Repair Kit. It's
made by Cycle Products Co, Model 650. Cycle Products Co. makes a
lot of the stuff you find at the discount dept stores, like K Mart,
Target, etc. I got the one I bought at Lionel Playworld for $2.99.

Anyway this stuff claims to "repair punctures and tears in less
than 3 minutes." It consists of small bottles of a liquid and a
powder. The liquid is a cyanoacrylate (glues skin, eyes, etc.)and
the powder is undefined, but toxic ("do not ingest or inhale powder")
It has a US Patent #4659589.

You squeeze a drop (or more as needed) from the liquid onto the
puncture. Wait 30 seconds. Then squeeze and shake a little of the
powder onto the drop to put a light layer of the powder over the
drop. Wait 2 minutes for the stuff to set up, then install and inflate.

The resulting repair looks like a scab on the tube. That is not
intended to be derogatory, but it's the best description I could
think of. Apparently the powder acts like a catalyst to the liquid
to form a flexible patch for the puncture.

I used this to repair approximately 30 thorn holes from this weekend
in 6 tires. (We made a very bad choice of trails!) I then used one of
the bikes in a mtn bike race yesterday and it still is holding the
air. Obviously a short term evaluation, but it did work so far.

The bottles of stuff are quite small, but only minimal amount of
material is needed for each repair. I have already gotten over 30
repairs out of one set and it's only half gone or so.

Has anyone else used this and what were your results?
