857.0. "Help finding a repair book" by EDUC8::LELLOS () Thu Sep 08 1988 12:18

I'm interested in finding a good bike maintenance/repair book. I have
looked at quite a few, and some are obviously better written and
better organized, but which book gives the best information? I have
an ATB and I've noticed that some older books don't include them.
Do ATBs require maintenance that much different than a traditional
    street bike?

    Thanks in advance,

    Pete

I'm not going to suggest any particular book, 'cause I'm thinking about
buying one, too. But there are a couple of things to look for...

First, there has been a lot of new technology in the past couple or 3
years, most notably indexed shifting. The problem I find in looking for
a good repair book is that they either don't have anything about indexed
shifting, or what they *do* have looks like it was shoved in hurriedly
as they were going to press. Make sure the book you choose is new
enough to give a reasonable treatment to indexing.

The other is the same problem on a different scale: mountain bikes/ATBs
are also fairly new on the scene. And there are a few differences, like
chainstay brakes (I have grown to hate 'em) for one thing. But on the
whole, ATBs are similar to most bikes.

Me, I'm just going to wait a year or so until there are more books to choose
from with information on the kind of stuff I have.
