852.0. "Front hanger just hanging on" by PSG::BUCHANAN (Bat) Tue Sep 06 1988 15:52

Anyone have an opinion on this:

A few weeks ago while making a quick front shift the chain got jammed up under
the chain stay and broke. I replaced the chain and all was well except that
the front shift from big to small was not very good anymore, it would rub for a
short period of time and then drop.

The frame is an aluminum Guerciotti made by Alan and the front derauiller
"braze on" is screwed on. It looks like the hanger was pulled loose when the
chain jammed. The bottom screw seems to have stripped the hole. The question
is should I try to attach the hanger with bigger screws or would this weaken
the frame, or should I just switch to a clamp on derauiller?

How is the derauiller attached on other aluminum and composit bikes?

    Hi,

I don't think you want to force the issue by using larger screws.
It probably would make the hanger weaker. I think the tubes on
an Alan are small enough to accomodate a clamp-on shifter. I know
that Cannondales, at least mine, bolt on a plate which the shifter
is then bolted onto. With a Cannondale, you would be hurting because
I don't know of any shifter currently made that can go around tubes
    that fat.
