835.0. "I'm thinking about getting a USCF license..." by UMBIKE::KLASMAN () Wed Aug 24 1988 14:49

Hey all you Veteran class racers, 35 years old and up, USCF and Citizen. I'm
thinking about getting a USCF license to race the Vet class, and I'd like to
hear the pros and cons. I've done a little Citizen racing with some success,
but I'm not sure I'm satisfied with what Cit racing has to offer.

My impression of cit racing so far is that the races are not run very well,
there's not many races and very little variety, little interest in teams and
team tactics. On the plus side I am doing rather well in them.

Any comments?

I was not a veteran racer, but I was a Cat 3/4. I found that most
of the races offered were very short criteriums. However, if you
are serious about racing then it is probably worth while to get
    a license.

I used to be a CAT III as well [and plan on getting my license back
this spring] If you are willing to do some research, and to drive
a little ways you can find whatever type race you are looking for.
There are lots of Crit's around, but there are enough road races
in the 30-90 mile category around too, not to mention the district
championship's that any license can go to..

[I'm in Maine, so I gotta drive at least 3 hours to go to most races]

Of course, you can be penalized by having your USCF license suspended
if you take part in any unlicensed race -- like WISILL and the like.
