765.0. "getting started - help!" by TOONS::CARTER (20 minutes into the future) Mon Jul 11 1988 20:34

I am about to make the first jump into the world of bicycle owners
(that is to say the serious 12 speed model owners) and I would like
some advise on where to shop and what to look for in a 12 speed
bicycle. I would like to spend about $450 - $500, and have heard
about last year's models or showroom models being a good buy. Can
anyone suggest a good, reliable and trustworthy bicycle shop in
the greater Marlboro area? I am sure that there are some other
entries in this notesfile that might have some information that
I need, but they weren't in the keywords list, so if you could point
me to the right topics, I would appreciate it. Also, I am sure
that it is necessary for me to point out that I am a novice rider,
having done a little riding last summer, but nothing serious of
any great distance. I am sure that will have some bearing on what
bicycle I should buy. If you also have any suggestions on standard
equipment that I should get right away as well, such as helmet,
shorts etc. that would be appreciated too.

    Thanks for your help.

Beside a good helmet (I recommend the Bell Ovation), some
padded shorts and either touring or racing shoes, pump to match
your tube type (Schrader or Presta) the next item that I would
recommend you to consider is a cyclometer with a cadence feature.
I haven't found any other item that has improved my performance
as much at any cost. I have a CATEYE, and in addition to keeping
me in the right RPM range (80 to 90 should be fine to start with)
it also provides me with a lot of motivational data that help me
to keep pushing harder to improve. Such as timing a routine, usuall
boaring ride, and turning it into a speed event. I think you'll
be very pleased with you results if you keep frequent checks on
your progress with a computer that records, Average Speed, Time
and Distance, but don't buy one without cadence until you have a
feel for home many revs your turning.
