732.0. "weak! Shimano shifter brackets" by TLE::REID (Hop them Rocks!) Wed Jun 15 1988 21:37

If you have bought a mountain bike this year with Shimano Exage
(mountain or trail) thumb shifters, then beware of weak metal
    brackets/nuts.

Within 3 weeks of getting my Specialized bike, one of the thumb
shifters broke off, shearing the nut thread.

The store I bought it at said there was a known problem with these,
and Shimano are producing thicker brackets to give the nuts more
grip. As far as I know, you should be able to exchange them when
the new brackets become available. (That's what I've been told).
I made a temporary bodge of using a longer nut of the same thread.

Meanwhile, don't give the shifters too much jip - it's not very
easy changing gears when the shifter isn't actually attached to
    anything!

    Happy hopping!
