689.0. "TANDEM riding techniques + misc. information" by GRAMPS::MATATIA () Thu May 26 1988 12:49

This year I have purchased a tandem bicycle and am thrilled with
it. Unfortunately I find information regarding tandems so limited.
The only source of articles I have found is the old 'Bicyle rider'
(now 'bicycle guide') magazine. (Also a note about tandem buying
    in this file see #46,#74,#363)

If anybody knows good sources of information or experiences of their
own, it would be great if that was added to this note. I would like
to see information regarding riding techniques, ie. the pros and
cons of out of phase riding between captain and stoker. Also is
anybody aware of any specialty equipment for tandems? I'm also worried
about parts in the future ie. Disk pads for a tandems braking system
(and where would I get information for self repairs of special
equipment like disk brakes). Any Tandem user groups out there?

All information will be helpful and I too will add entries on some
    of my findings and experiences.

    			Thanks for any information, Michael

There is a "Tandem Club of America", or some such title. They
are planning a rally in Durham N.H. this summer (pigy-backing on
last year's NEAR). Linda Harvey in GSW is active, but any good
bike store should be able to put you in contact with the TCA.
I've put in a few miles stoking a Santanna, but I prefer Gary's
Counterpoint. (Gary - hint.) - Chris

I picked up some info on TCA while I was down at GEAR-Up this
    weekend:
Tandem Club of America (TCA) - for membership, send a check
for $8.00 payable to "Tandem Club of America" to:

    		Mal and Jean Smith
    		TCA Treasurers
    		11010 Jamison Road
    		East Aurora, NY 14052

dues include a subscription to "Doubletalk", the newsletter for
    Tandem enthusiasts.
(GEAR note: 2200 riders, I had a Counterpoint captain giving
rides to the unbelievers at my Recumbent Trials, GEAR-Up at Saratoga
Springs will be extra nice [buffet style meals] and extra expensive
    - about $175.) - Chris

Anyone ever tried out a tandem mountain bike?

Ritchie makes them, and we're toying with the idea of getting one,
but just how insane is it to tie two people together on a bike on
a trail? I guess they must be intended more for 4-wheel-drive
roads than they are for trail riding.

Yes, I've tried a tandem mountain bike. The frame is too
long for serious trails. The right fork rake is *impossible*
to find. (the person steering will need *muscles* on rough
    terrain!)
However, it's a good idea anyway! Fat tires work real
good on a tandem, and all those gears come in handy too.
The extra-stout brakes are useful tandem accessories also.
Just don't plan on doing anything really *rough*. Call it
a 'mountain bike', but it's really a road bike.
