680.0. "novice confused/needs advice-ATV or Standard" by POBOX::BORKOVICH () Thu May 19 1988 18:54

I would appreciate any advice on what type of bicycles to purchase
for my wife and myself. The confusion is between whether to purchase
standard 10speeds or All Terrain Bicycles.

We don't intend to do any racing, competition etc. but would like
quality bikes that will perform well and live a long trouble free
life. Our maximum distance on rides will probably not exceed
     5-10 miles.

Our budget limits us to approx. $250.00 per bicycle. Any
recommendations on type, brand( i.e.Trek, Panasonic, Schwinn )
and best buy for the buck would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks in advance,

    Kris B.

If you only plan on taking short trips, the mountain bikes are the
way to go. They give you the option of going on-road or off-road
    and are extremely durable.

My wife and I have mountain bikes with child carriers for the two
kids. We go on 10 or 15 mile trips with no problem. Last weekend
we did 20 miles on hilly roads with the kids, and that proved to
be a bit too much; we'll keep it to 10 or 12 miles.

As for longer trips, I have a Shogun 500 touring bike for that.
The mountain bike isn't really suitable to ride long trips comfortably,
although there are lots of people who do it anyways.

The best deal I've found on a mountain bike was at Gamache's cyclery
in Fitchburg. The bike was for my wife. It was a Mongoose for
about $250.00. The price may have gone up since she bought it last
year. For the price, it's an excellent bike.

If you would like to spend more, I recommend the Specialized line
of mountain bikes. They seem to be of high quality and real hot
    sellers.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Denis

Inyour price range, you might want to consider city bikes. They;re
essentially low end mountain bikes, without some of the features
you'd need in the dirt (like sealed bearings), and with tires more
suited to pavement. Most manufacturers have some in the $200 to
    $300 dollar range.

Thanks for the advice. It sounds like mountain bikes will be the
    choice.

    thanks again,

"10-speed mountain bike" is an oxymoron. Make sure it is 15 or 18.

You have to be careful in that price range.

I have a touring bike for rides 20+ miles. Both my wife and I have
city bikes for riding together on "casual" rides. Our city bikes
are both new this year; one cost $260, the other $320. They are:

    	Univega Land Rover (12-speed) - $260
    	Giant AT730(?) (18-speed) $320

Both are good for short rides on bad roads: you don't have to worry
about having to true up your wheels after each ride! The Giant is
a clone of one of the Specialized bikes - same components and from
the same factory, but about $25 cheaper. Its a nice bike.

BTW, there was a good product review of 100(?) or so bikes in Bicyling
magazine in the April, 1988 issue. Reviews arranged by price and
prduct type. Get hold of that, if you can. If not, call me & I'll
    send you a copy.

My wife just purchased a Fuji mountain bike at Goodale's in Nashua
for about $270. It has a chromolly frame, good quality wheels (no
steel) and indexed gearing. I think that it is a good investment.
