668.0. "Time Trial Info needed" by PRYDE::DAMICO (JANE DAMICO) Fri May 13 1988 20:47

    Can anyone tell me how I can find out about TIME TRIALS ? What
    exactly are they, and where can I get involved in the Marlboro/Hudson/
    Sudbury/Concord area.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Also, does anyone have any stats on what a good training pace is
    for a beginner, per mile. Someone told me 3 minutes but that seems
    rather slow? What do you think ?

    Many factors influence pace -- terrain, road conditions, the number
    of partners, distance.... The list goes on. If you're riding alone,
    your pace can be 5-7 mph slower than it would be if you rode in a pace
    line. A "good" training pace also depends on your conditioning.

    A time trial makes you ride alone, but (on the other hand) it's
    relatively short. You can ride slightly over your anaerobic threshold
    when you're racing them. Thus, you'll find times ranging from about
    23(citizen) - 29(pro) mph turned by local riders on a relatively
    flat course. You definitely don't want to train this way, though.

    If you're just starting training, the best way to set your pace
    is to listen to your body. Stay smooth, use a constant level of
    effort, and keep your cadence up. You should be able to ride at
    least 1-2 hours at your training pace without discomfort.

    3 minutes a mile (20 mph) is pretty fast if you're on your own.
    Unless you're in really good shape, I think you'll find yourself
    wearing down instead of building a good base.

668.3"The Solo Cyclist"USMRM2::PJOHNSONMon May 16 1988 12:457
    There is a good book by Fred Matheny called "The Solo Cyclist" which
    discusses Time-Trialing in depth. It's well written and quite
    informative. After I read it this winter I was chomping at the bit
    to get to the Sudbury time trial. I'd recomment reading this book
    if you're just starting out.

668.4 meet the IME team!USMRM5::MREIDTue Aug 30 1988 18:4019
    I'd like to invite everyone to do the Wayside Inn TT!

    On Wed. 8/31/88 The IME team will be riding in the Wayside Inn TT.
    The team is a professional team that will probably ride in the Tour
    de France in five years. Big names include: Graham Miller, Jeff
    Slack, Frank MacCormack, Mark MAcCormack, & more. I believe Graham
    will be going to the Olympics.

    Why not come down & ride! It's a chance to meet some riders
    that may be famous ... "I remember when I did a TT with Graham;
    yeah, I stayed with him for 5 miles, ... or was that 5 seconds"

    If anyone needs directions or info, call me @ DTN: 297-6798

668.8Mountain Bike TTMEMORY::GOODWINin a spasm of lucidity...Fri Apr 07 1989 13:144
    The Wayside Inn TT has added a new class this year - Mountain Bikes.
    Same rules apply for the Mountain bikes with one exception, they
    must ride on the shoulder. Mark Reid holds the current record (also
    the only rider). :-) :-)
668.9Wayside Inn TT: Wed 6:30 PMUSMRM5::MREIDWed Apr 26 1989 12:247
    The Wayside Inn TT will start at 6:30 PM instead of 6:00 PM, so that
    more people can make it to the TT. (6:30 start time begins May 3,
    1989).

668.10 yellow line fever USMRM5::MREIDWed Aug 02 1989 20:2515
    The Minuteman Road Club is in the process of deciding what to do
    with 'yellow-line' offenders ... those who cross over the yellow
    centerline during the weekly Wayside Inn Time Trial.

    We had an incident last week where a rider went over the line
    and almost hit a car ... the driver of the car was IRATE. All it
    takes is one angry persistant driver to get the tt cancelled ...

    So we want to penalize riders who cross the centerline. But how?

    Any suggestions? How is it handled (if at all) in other training
    time trials?

DQ'ing the offender without refund of entry fee, for starters. Ain't no
reason at all to go into British mode (left-hand driving) during a TT.
It's somewhat harder to avoid during pack-type races, but why would you
go over the center in a TT?
                                                                 ken
668.12DQ for the dayIAMOK::WESTERWed Aug 02 1989 21:3311
    I agree with the last reply, DQ for the day. Also, Don't let them ride
    the next week as an additional "penalty." After all, TT's should only
    be a test, not an all out race. There's no reason to go over the line,
    especially with Marshalls to remind you to stay inside the line.

    It only takes a few complaints to the local police to have the town
    come down and stop you from holding the TT. As we all know, cars have
    a hard enough time sharing one lane, let alone two. I'd hate to see a
    fun and well run event like the Sudbury MRC TT cancelled.

Ditto. Especially the "penalty" of not letting them ride next week. If they do
it a second time don't let them back at all.

Out in the Holden TT that Bike Alley puts on they have a turn around because
its an out and back course. They have a marshal at the turn around. If he tells
you to stop (because of on coming traffic) and you don't, they DQ you.

I've seen club rides that get a little carried away and them turning into a
race. It seems that there is always someone that goes through a stop sign or
red light just to "win" getting back to the shop first. This is in a "club
ride" not a TT. So I can believe people that will try everything to "win".
Some peoples ego's can't take coming in 11th.

668.14 turns USMRM5::MREIDThu Aug 03 1989 14:595
    The reason that people cross the yellow line in the Wayside Inn
    TT is that it's a loop course, with 5 right-hand turns, some tighter
    than 90 degrees. People cross over the yellow after the turn - right
    into the oncoming traffic lane.

	I don't think there are any reasons to cross the yellow lines, just
	excuses - Which one of the people DQ last night offered a lot of.

    Don't post or even calculate the times for yellow line offenders.
    Getting DQ'ed doesn't mean much at Sudbury (where there are no prizes)
    unless you don't let them ride at all the following week. What most
    people want to see is their time -- which you can take away from them
    by not adding it up. (Sure, they can estimate it, but they'll never
    really know, and it won't be posted in the weekly standings.

    Mark,

    How about some sort of "community service"? Say, make the perpetrator
    serve as marshall for the next one or two TT's. Seeing cars bomb
    toward an intersection should impress them on just who stands to lose
    by running over the yellow line.

668.22 Wayside Inn TT - no longer at Wayside Inn ...USMRM5::MREIDFri May 11 1990 19:5422
    The Sudbury police have put an official end to the Wayside
    Inn TT in it's past location at the Waside Inn.

    The Minuteman Road Club is currently looking into another
    route that will be near the MRO area in Marlboro. The TT
    will start up in it's new location (wherever that is!)
    as soon as we get approval from the Marlboro Police.

    I didn't see the letter that the Sudbury Police (Safety
    Officer) sent to the club president, but apparently he
    cited reasons such as "Dutton St is too narrow, too windy,
    with too much traffic, and too many complaints from drivers."
    The president was unable to talk the police into letting
    us continue on the course we have used for about 5+ years.

    If anyone has any ideas for a TT location in the Framingham,
    Sudbury,Marlboro area, let me know. Nothing is final yet for
    the new course.

Just for the hell of it, once I cut through the Fort Devens Auxillary
(what fence?) from PKO down to Main St. Sudbury. Nice roads, no traffic,
perfect for TT's, close to Wayside Inn. Wear fatigues and look official.
On a more serious note, Sudbury/Stow Rd, running NW/SE along the SW edge of
the Army base, is fairly long, flat, straight, and not very busy even at
rush hour, but not very close for Framingham riders. There isn't much
between Main St. and 20; lots of dead-end residential stuff. Good ruck. _KB
