The Boston Road Club runs a weekly training series from March through October.
Every Sunday morning we have four separate races for different levels of
experience. The average number of entrants is 200, some weeks it gets up to
300 or 350.

This year we want to get USCF sanctioned for insurance.

Here is the way our races are broken up:

       Race Distance Level
D 4 miles absolute beginners, coaching is included
C 12 miles first year racers
B 20 miles second year racers and USCF cat IVs
A 32 miles USCF IIs & IIIs only

				Craig Macfarlane
				BRC President

				(617) 873-2711 w

PS. If any of you are in the Boston area you are welcome to race. The course
is located in Newton, Mass. on Wells Avenue. For more info call me or the

WHOOPS! I lost the rest of my last note. Anyway, As I was saying,
when those nervous riders get caught in the pack they often panic
and bring down about 6 other racers. I don't like risking my bike
or my neck just for a training race.

I think the D race is great for new racers because there is also
coaching involved. If you would like to try racing for the first
time this is an excellent way to start. If you get dropped you
can rejoin when the pack comes around, and you can see how you measure
up to the other racers around.

Citizen racing is fun, and many citizens are at least as good as
the CAT IV's. NEBC is starting up a citizen team this year with
Jerseys and entry fee reimbursements. By joining a team you can
learn race tactics and form a training routine. Saturday mornings
behind the Library in Bedford,MA at 9:00 or 9:30 is when the training
rides start. There are still openings on the team.

BRC also provides race fee reimbursement but no team. But,BRC's
Jerseys are probably the UGLIEST you'll ever see.

Reply if you're interested in citizen racing in New England.

I am interested in cit racing in New England. I'm also doing ultra-marathons
this year, so I don't know how much time I can spend on that. I'll probably
ride with Nashua Velo Club cit team, tho I'm not committed yet. Their team
will probably be very loosely organized. Don't know how much interest they'll
have, either.

What is going on with your team?
   How many 'openings'?
What kind of commitment are you looking for?
Do you have the Cit racing schedule yet?

Kevin

Kevin,
I can give you a few more details. The NEBC costs $18.00 to join
and as of now there's no additional fee for joining the team. In
terms of openings, there's no set limit right now. I think there
are only three official members on the team. I'm not one of them.
I haven't joined yet because I haven't been riding much and I was
looking at another club too. I'm 27 the other riders on the team
    are 30, 33, 35. So, it's almost a veteran team. Scott Sherman
is the one who asked me to join. Bob Evans, and George? are the
other guys. The only requirements are that you wear the team shorts
and jersey in the races. You're not required to ride in all local
races so it's pretty flexible. Again, you get all entry fees
    reimbursed.

About the race schedule, Mark Hagen put it together but he hasn't
given any out yet. I don't know what the hold up is. BTW Mark
is finally giving all us citizen racers a break by joining the Laughing
Alley Vets team as a USCF Vet. Now someone else will win the Cit
    races!

Finally, Tomorrow at 10:00 the Apple Blossom race is being run at
the Sheraton Boxboro. $10.00 entry, 18 miles, nice course. But
I won't be there, I hate riding in the cold!

I'm interested also. Bedford on Saturdays may work well for me.
Besides joining the BRC what do I have to do to actually join the
    team?

578.6Citizen race teamDISSRV::WESTERTue Apr 19 1988 14:4911
If your talking about the BRC they don't have a citizens team.
You can get a license and join their CAT IV team if you want to
    race with the BRC.

NEBC has the citizens team and you just need to show up Saturday
morning in Bedford and ask the folks there. There are no requirements
except for a desire to race and train this year. It should be fun
and a great way to learn more about team tactics and racing in general.

Thanks,

There are two ways to get there by Rt. 128:

1) Exit 19A -- cross back over the highway. At the lights take a right
(should be '2ND Ave') go to the end and take a right ('4TH Ave.). Go to
the end and take a left (Nahanton St.). Go up about 1/4 mile and take
a right at the first set of lights (Wells Ave.). If you've gotten this far
you should have no problem finding it.

2) Exit 19B -- Once you get off the highway, take a left at the first set of
lights. Travel parallel to 128 and take you first left (Kendrick St?).
This street becomes Nahanton St. You should cross over 128 and go by Polaroid
on your right. Go another 1/4-1/2 miles and take a right at the lights.
This is Wells Ave.

If you are coming from Boston, Brookline, Newton, J.P., etc. call me
and I'll give you different directions.
