572.0. "Your Klein or Cannondale is illegal" by AQUA::OCONNOR (The law dont want no gear-gammer) Fri Mar 11 1988 12:21

    Hi,

Just read this Article in V-news in which the UCI has, in an effort
to curb extreme aerodynamic tricks in bikes, outlawed from
international competition any bike with 'fat' tubes. This was done
to outlaw the extreme airfoil shapes being used and the UCI was
not aware of Kleins, Cannondales, Treks or Kestrels. The USCF has
decided to allow racers to use them in non-international and national
    events.

re .0	Sounds reasonable enough to me, but I wasn't planning
to use my Stumpjumper in any international road races anyway. Know
anyone on the international circuit using Cannondales ?

My brother is in product mgmt with Cannondale (for their new tandem)
and he says that somebody with Vitus is on the board or panel that
made this ruling...they most certainly were aware of the impact
on Cannondale, because Cannondale fought it all the way. Pat (brother)
says that Cannondale had lined up some prominent U.S. riders to
use their stuff, but it all fell apart when the ruling was made.
They are still trying to get it reversed or modified.

a mix of normal, fat and fatter tubes that really look strange...

    Reg,

I'm looking at a picture of Connie Carpenter on what is definately
a black Cannondale. And Davis is supposed to be riding one too.
I guess it just means I'll just have get something else to ride
in the worlds this year :-) :-) :-).

Davis Phinney advertises Cannondales (he peddles them, so to speak) but he does
not ride them. He rides what his sponsers get paid for. The 7-eleven team
rides "Huffy" bikes, but look at the chain stay and you'll see they are made by
Serrotta. Actually there are stories of riders who insist on riding their
favorite bike despite who their sponsor is. For example Robert Millar fell in
love with the Peuguet carbon fiber bike when he rode for Peuguet/Shell. When he
went to Panasonic he didn't want to ride a steel Eddy M. (sp) so he painted his
Pueguet and put on the Columbus stickers. A Cannondale, on the other hand
wouldn't be so easy to hide.
