571.0. "Fast rides to Hampton Beach, NH" by UMBIKE::KLASMAN () Thu Mar 10 1988 17:00

I'm planning on doing some rides this season from Nashua NH to the Hampton
Beach area. I'm really not familiar with any of the roads in between, other
than 101 (do they allow bikes on the highway section of 101?). I'm looking
for route suggestions and possibly some riding partners. I'm guessing the
distance is around 75 miles and my time to be about 4.5 hours. I'm planning
on meeting my girlfriend at the beach to spend the rest of the day out there,
then get a ride back home.

    Kevin,

Just by looking at the size of 101 I'd say you can't ride there.
Generally divided highways are NG. From Nashua you can take rt
111 pretty much the whole way. I'm not sure of the distance.

During my first century last July, I planned to ride on 101.
When I got there (at Raymond), a sign indicated that absolutely
no bicycles were allowed. This section was a four lane, divided
highway. At various other times last year, I saw numerous riders
on the two lane stretches of 101.

101 is a new road. "old 101" is now mostly renamed 27. The section
from Raymond to Epping is murder. Old concrete with the bump-bump every
10 feet. Next to no shoulder. Cars doing 65 because they always could
and noone's there to stop them and (putting the above together) cars
passing anywhere coming right at you at 65 and you on you legitimate
piece of road looking for a place to bail out.

As for Nashua to the beach. 111-125-107-1-some little road to 1A is
not bad. Another route is 111-108 to Exeter to 101C, comes out a bit
into the north section of Hampton at Bill Bailey's. 101D comes out
another mile to the north. The beaches are better in Rye anyway --
less people, less smoke in the air and such.

They are pretty good in mid September, crowded but not bumper to bumper
too often. Just remember that the steel grate bridges can be
trecherous when wet. (Seabrook, Newburyport and on 1B to New Castle)

RE: the steel bridges, unless you are riding a wide tyre MTB type
bike, you might be better off to walk your bike across. I think
at the bride between Seabrook and Hampton there is even a sign
requesting that bike be walked across the bridge.
