561.0. "Has Anyone Toured Italy on a Bike?" by ERASER::WARD () Tue Mar 01 1988 16:27

Has anyone bicycled in Italy. I'm considering a trip through
the countryside outside of Florence, but don't see any tour
like that listed in any bike touring book. That makes me suspect
that it would be VERY hilly.

Most tour books describe a tour of the Italian lakes region up
near the Swiss border. My experience with European holiday
resort areas, though, is that they are crowded and full of
    car traffic.

I would appreciate any information you might have on bicycling
in either area, or elswhere in Italy.

re .0	I can vouch for the fact that it gets VERY STEEP up
in the mountains at the Swiss/Italian border, i.e. St Bernard Pass.

If you do not mind writing to someone in Italy, I can give you an
    excellent reference.

My brother-in-law has just spent the last 5 months or so biking
through all the provinces of Italy, and portions of France, Greece,
Israel and Egypt. He is now in the process of planning an
around-the-world bike trip & would probably love to give a fellow
    biker some info.

If I can be of further help, let me know.
