540.0. "A CYCLIST FOR PRESIDENT???" by AKOV11::FULLER () Mon Feb 08 1988 14:52

    Did anyone see Bruce Babbitt on the news Saturday? He did a
    23 mile bike ride with a local Iowa bike club in subfreezing
    temperatures. He was fully decked out in bikie clothing,
    helmet and all.

540.1But is THAT a reason to elect him?HPSVAX::MILLERI Heart My Picture of a DogMon Feb 08 1988 16:221

    re .1	Of course its good enough reason to elect him ! It
    gives him a positive attribute count of 1, which is 1 more than
    the other candidates, right ?

    Sure, didn't we all vote for Carter because he was a jogger? :-)

    If Babbit did get in, can you imagine the secret service guys swarming
    around him on workouts? They would need special bikes with UZI
    braze-ons...

    There's no need to worry, though. He's the only candidate with
    enough huevos to say that the budget won't be balanced without a
    tax increase.

I've actually seen this a few years back. VP Bush was out jogging one
morning, and happened by where we were having a club time trial. He had
quite the crew - uniformed police on motorcycles, guys with guns riding
bikes, and some hapless sod in jogging shorts trying to hide a really
massive pistol under his T-shirt :-). Bush stopped to talk to us for a
few minutes, mumbled out some *really* inane garbage, and left....

Despite all the comical guys chase AROUND Bush, the best was the guy
watching their cars - a ***HUGE*** Polynesian chap in a >perfectly<
tailored suit, about the size and disposition of one of the Easter
Island idols.....

                                                ken
540.6The family that bikes together.....DOODAH::WIEGLERTue Feb 09 1988 13:524
    I was talking to Bruce Babbitt's wife a few weeks ago and she said
    that the first time they were in Iowa was a number of years ago when
    they biked across the entire state. She said it sure looks different
    from the campaign trail.
540.7Lets CaucusHPSVAX::MILLERI Heart My Picture of a DogTue Feb 09 1988 17:4113
    Based upon Reg's response to my comment, I wish, Mr. Moderator,
    to nominate our very own Reggie, for President of these United States.
    He qualifies:
    	1. He bikes, albiet downhill all the time.
    	2. He has a sense of humor, and uses it well.
    	3. He has a sense of the historical (what DID happen 20 years
    ago this May?).
    	4. He has gone on record as having said, "If it ain't broke,
    don't fix it".

    I don't know about the rest of you, but Reg is MY man!!...now, where
    did I put those bumper stickers?? They were just here a moment
    ago....
540.8Shave that beard, Mr. Burgess!AMUN::CRITZPavarotti loses 85Wed Feb 10 1988 13:268
    	However, the last (and only) time I saw Reg, he had a beard
    	(as do I). The American public is not going to elect a president
    	with a beard, even if it is Reg 8-) I guess he has to shave
    	the beard or forget about being president.

    	Too bad. He could have made a difference.
