537.0. "Century Maniacs" by WCSM::BUCHANAN (Mike Buchanan, Mt. View, CA) Fri Feb 05 1988 15:45

For you Century Maniacs, I saw this in the February California Bicyclist
magazine:

        Challenge For Century Riders

Would you like to be acknowledged for riding a bunch of centuries in '88? If
so, the National Points Challenge recently announced by the Ultra-Marathon
Cycling Association is for you. The UMCA will keep tally of all the organized
centuries (90-110 mile rides only) completed by participants. UMCA promises
cyclists who finish the year in the top 15 percent "national recognition and an
award" (as yet unspecified). Contact: UMCA, 4790 Irvine Blvd., Ste. 105,
Irvine, CA 92720.

That's the piece in full. No mention of if it will cost you anything or how
you register your rides. It seems strange that they would put an upper limit
on the length of the ride they would count. Most rides around here have a 200
km option which is in the range of 120-130 miles. I'm not sure what kind of
award you might get, the centuries give you nice embroidered patches which I
just throw in a desk drawer. It also seems to be designed for places like
California where the century season stretches from March until November
with some hard-cores doing 15 or more.

To get into this you have to join the UMCA. They actually have
applications at Nashbar in Needham. Send name, address, telephone
number and $25 to the address in .0 to join. Newsletter, etc
    are provided.

Note that the Century challenge above is the wimpy division for
UMCA. They offer 3 different ones:

      - Standard - rides of 200 or more miles, averaging at least
                   200 miles per 24 hours
      - Open - individual rides of 200 or more miles while averaging
at least 8.33 mph (standard division rides must be
               "organized")
      - Century - Organized rides of 90-110 miles in length. Total
number of rides are counted, not total miles.

UMCA is also the sponsor for the RAAM Opens and RAAM itself.

They also have a "combined division" which unfortunately includes
"all of the above." The last newsletter said something about the
combined category including organized but longer than a century
rides.

Bahh, sounds like a marketing approach to getting more members.

And remember folks, there are special rules for the Standard
Division to allow the BMB (Boston-Montreal-Boston) lower
mileage qualifiers (200km, 300km) to be counted even though
other rides have to be at least 200 miles.
