510.0. "Road Race Bike" by NEXUS::MONROE () Thu Dec 31 1987 16:51

I'm looking at getting a good road racing bike. Does anyone
have any suggestion as to some ones out there ??
I would like to stay below the $700 mark....

I've been partial to Specialized for a while. I used to own an Allez
SE (84 model) and currently own a Stumpjumper. They have two good road
bikes at or under that price. The Sirrus and the Allez SE. I'm not
sure what changes have been made for the 88 models. In 87 both sported
full CroMoly frames and good light-weight clincher rims. The Sirrus
had the Shamino 105 group and the Allez had the Suntour Sprint group,
both with some componants with the Specialized logo.

Well, you could have mine for $699.99. It will fit you perfectly,
    guaranteed.

Actually, Reg is on the right track: buy a used bike. If you look
in the Want Advertiser, bike shop bulletin boards, or even in this
notes file, you'll find people selling their used road bikes for
much less than you could buy one new.

Good frames and components last a LONG time.

    	re .4 Ya_Butt, good (used, say 20 - 30K Km) frames
and components just aren't "fashionable"; Who would want '86 or
'87 colours for an '88 bike for example ? Techno_glitz and marketing,
and planned obsolescence, and sex appeal, and..... Omigawd, I don't
think you realize that the Oriental economy might be at stake if
we continue to use previous years' toys, to say nothing of the risk
to Gummint revenues in the forms of sales and import taxes.
