503.0. "Shimano 600EX freewheel quality problems?" by AUSSIE::GROHN () Thu Dec 10 1987 17:43

Has anyone had any problems with Shimano 600 EX freewheels?

I have recently broken four freewheels in about 2 months. I have had
a 3 year trouble free run with the 600 EX group up till then.

No 1 was on my road bike. Going up a hill one day there was a bang and I
had a freewheel in both directions. I was not very upset as the freewheel
had done about 20000 miles, nearly all of it in hilly country. Off to the bike
shop and buy a new one.

No 2 was the replacement for No 1 Going down a hill about one month later
there was lots of nasty noises from the rear end (no the bikes). The
The inner body of the freewheel had sheared, allowing the freewheel to
disassemble spilling ball bearings all over the place. Off to the bike shop
and they say thats strange, shouldn't do that and give me a new one. So far so
good with the new one

No 3 was on my mountain bike. The freewheel started bind at one point when you
rotate it. The freewheel had been in LOTS of mud so I thought gung had got
into the insides. Off to the bike shop and buy another one.

No 4 was the replacement for No 3. It started doing exactly the same as No 3
and I havnt been anywhere near the mud. Off to the bike shop and the owner
looks over the counter to see if I have 40 inch thighs. The owner and
I are going to pull the freewheel apart to see what is going wrong.

503.1No problems with 600 EX casette'sRETORT::SCHNARECHARLIE SCHNAREFri Dec 11 1987 14:263
    I have a 600 EX cassette hub which has about 30,000 miles on it.
    When I was racing I had it overhauled about four years ago and have
    done nothing to it since. Still no problems.

    I had a 600 EX cassette hub which had about 5,000 miles on it when it
    became a double freewheel (spinning both directions). Quck work with a
    spare brake cable changed it to a fixed gear 12-speed, and I rode it 15
    miles to home.

    Perhaps the failure was hastened by my attempts at overhaul, since you
    can't use the normal dunk and oil method that works on freewheels.
    Perhaps it was brought on by the fully loaded tour through NH just 3
    months earlier.

    Freehubs are nice when they work, but when they fail, you loose the wheel.

503.35th broken freewheel in a year!AUSSIE::GROHNMon Jun 20 1988 23:139
	I dont beleive it - Freewheel No 5 has started to play up in the same
    way that No 3 & No 4 (see .0). Has anyone else been having problems?

    When I pulled apart No 3 & No 4, I found that one of the little
    ratchets inside of the freewheel had broken into small peices of metal,
    which then jammed the freewheel.
