500.0. "TREK recommendations anyone?" by TOMCAT::KLASMAN () Mon Nov 30 1987 15:22

Does anyone out there have any experience with TREK bikes, esp their racing
aluminum bikes? I'd like a 2000, but can't afford it, so I'm looking at a
1200 or 1500. The 1500 may be new in 1988; there was a 1200 in 1987. If you
believe the reviews, they are good climbers and are comfortable, good for long
rides. Is it true? Does anyone know of good dealers that handle TREK?

Regards,

Kevin

500.1I liked them, but bought something elseWCSM::BUCHANANMike Buchanan, Mt. View, CATue Dec 01 1987 15:2624
I looked at all the aluminum bikes this past spring including the Treks. My
understanding is that the 2000 and the 1500 are exactly the same frame, the
difference is in the components. The 2000 has the Dura-Ace group and sew-ups
while the 1500 has 600/Sante group and clinchers. The 1200 shows a different
tubing decal so I assume that it is lower quality and perhaps different angles.

I rode both the 2000 and the 1500 and my impressions were very favorable. They
are very light, very stiff and yet quite comfortable. I ended up buying a
different bike which I pieced together from frame and separate components.

My only complaints were if you're going to spend that kind of money you better
get exactly what you want. I wanted the Dura-Ace group but did not want
tubulars (I have a pair of them from my last bike hanging up in my garage that
I can't seem to even give away). I also wanted the 7 speed group, areo break
levers, longer crank arms and Look pedals. You can buy the 2000/1500 frame
set alone but it ends up costing much more going that route.

I don't know what Trek has in mind for their '88 bikes.

Does anyone have idea what is going to happen to bike prices this year with
the price of the dollar? The Trek frames are made in America with American
tubing (at least the aluminum bikes) but all the components are Japanese.

If you want to give them away, I'll take them.
