464.0. "Adult tricycle wanted..." by JETSAM::HANAUER (Mike... Bicycle~to~Ice~Cream) Fri Sep 11 1987 15:34

I have a cyclist friend whose legs are becoming weaker (because of
multiple sclorosis). He is interested in purchasing an adult
tricycle, either new or used.

Problem, who makes or sells them?

Any leads or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Mike,

I have access to an old Schwinn trike that I may be able to get rid of. It
needs a lot of work...the tires are shot and its not pretty anymore (the paint
looks like its speckled with rust). Anyway, it may be available for a song.
If you're interested, I could inquire as to the availability of the bike, and
what the price would be.

Kevin:

Yes, would appreciate info. Thanks.

I'm not sure exactly what he wants, and I doubt he knows either.
Guess is that something of reasonable quality is important.

But something used which is basically good would likely be ok,
as would something new (from where made by who??).

Again, any info or leads welcome.	Thanks.

PS - I'll be in class (Bedford) next week, so replies may be slow.
But still wanted and appreciated.

My observation is that there are two types of trikes. The ones
available in this country are usually for the retired types in
Florida who just want to get groceries and such. The quality,
high-performance ones are made, used, and raced in Great Britain.
I saw some nice ones at Paris-Brest-Paris, they were all owned
by folks who spoke a funny dialect of, I think, English. The
name on the frame was usually Longstaff.

I'm not recommending this for .0 only mentioning that they exist.
Given the nature of MS, they probably should not be recommended
since they require that the rider have a good deal of flexibility
to account for road camber and quick maneuvers, etc.

There was also a tandem trike named Le Couchon on the down tube,
with "The Pig" on the rear marathon tube.

You get a funny feeling when you see a rider just step off a bike
without putting it anywhere and it does not fall over.
