436.0. " * Long Ride Discomfort *" by FTMUDG::ERBAUGH () Wed Aug 19 1987 23:04

                         * Long Ride Discomfort *

    I am training for my first century. As I take longer and longer
    rides I have been plagued with the 'ole underwear getting botched
    in the crotch syndrome causing considerable discomfort. Has anyone
    cured this problem? I know what your thinking....TRY A DIFFERENT
    SEAT,AS*#OLE!!

    I don't think my seat is the problem. Before I bought cycling shorts
    I didn't have any problems because my touring shorts were loose enough
    that my briefs didn't creep.

    Also, if I stop and get readjusted I feel fine for the next hour
    or so.

    ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!!

    Your fit on the bike is also wrong. Try tilting the saddle back
    a notch, being aware that this may affect your overall position
    and make somewhere else feel uncomfortable.

436.4If you don't wanna go "raw"...STAR::TEAGUEI'm not a doctor,but I play one on TV...Thu Aug 20 1987 13:2213
A lot of people don't use underwear, but I always felt a little weird
wearing form-fitting biking shorts with nothing underneath. So if you
don't want to go "raw", I'd suggest some of this "second skin" underwear
I see in bike catalogs.

Ultra-thin, bikini-style briefs have done fine by me, however. You didn't
say what kind of briefs you wear, though. If they are the standard, white,
cotton, Fruit-of-the-Loom things, no *wonder* you're uncomfortable! Wear
something (*anything*) else!!

436.5ride a recumbent!EUCLID::PAULHUSChris @ MLO 8-3/T13 dtn 223-6871Thu Aug 20 1987 15:5711
    	Some thoughts: My personal opinion is that Lycra shorts are
    a bit too revealing when worn as ment to be: sans underwear. So
    I wear wool or wool/acrylic blend shorts made by Grace Jones of
    Jones Cyclewear in Lunenburg, MA. [I wore my Lycra shorts once
    and now only wear them UNDER long tights on cold days.]
        For cold weather riding (below 40 deg F), you may want to try
    the Lycra under tights combo. Another layer could be to take some
    regular briefs and cut the thick edge/elastic away on the inner
    parts of the leg holes. The support vanishes but it's an extra
    layer of warmth on chilly days.
    	Of course, the best solution is to ride a recumbent! - Chris

    I have to agree with .1 except that its not toungue (sp?) in cheek.
    If you pay good money for soft chamois to put next to your skin
    why put more money into breifs to keep you away from that shammy.
    I've worn lycra skin shorts and suits since about 1980 I would only
    say they are more revealing if you wear a light color. I only black
    ones so I can use them for racing.

    If I may offer my "two cents" as well:

    (a) Bag the briefs! Last year I got myself a pair of lycras after
        years of hard riding and severe crotchitis. I'm the first to
        admit that they felt WEIRD when I first put them on, like they
    	weren't on at all, all strange feelings went away after my first
    	ride with them! And the only thing they reveal is how well
   	conditioned your legs are.

    (b) Stop sitting "on" the seat, and start sitting "against" it!
        Tilt the seat so that more of your weight vectors towards
    	the pedals, so that you are leaning rather than sitting in
    	the saddle. A slight angle makes a big difference!
436.9Don't angle the seat!!NAC::CAMPBELLTue Aug 25 1987 12:5210

    As long as we're all putting in our 2 cents worth.......

    Don't tilt the seat forward. That'll put alot mor pressure on your
    hands, shoulders and back!!! THe seat should be level! If that's
    uncomfortable then it's probably to high!

    Bag the Briefs!!!!

436.10Tilt it back, not forwardsCIMNET::JOHNSONMatt JohnsonTue Aug 25 1987 12:577
    By angling, I assumed that .8 meant to angle the seat backwards,
    not forwards. For men, the nose of the seat should be tilted
    slightly upwards, for women, it should be nearly level. Though
    the position looks masochistic, it's actually more comfortable
    because of the shape of your pelvis.

436.11If you are female...JETSAM::HANAUERMike... Bicycle~to~Ice~CreamTue Aug 25 1987 16:284
If you are a women, you should seriously consider a womans saddle.

At GEAR, the doctor at a seminar stressed that, in a mans saddle, a
woman is sitting on her ovaries, not considered a good situation.
436.12So much for the credibility of GEAR seminars...MENTOR::REGTue Aug 25 1987 17:228
    re .11	"sitting on her ovaries" ?

    	I don't think I know any women that are built that way. What
    sort of "Doktor" was this ?

    maybe he plays one on TV ... or, that's a good line in the
    the singles bars, "Hi, I'm a doctor..."

        Thanks for all the advice folks.

        I canned the 'Fruit of the Loom' type briefs. The most
    effective solution, however, was changing the angle of the seat
    (from level to angled up just ever so slightly).

        I also tried some nylon type briefs that have worked quite well.
    They would be even better if they didn't have a center seam.

        I dont think I'll stand up and ride the whole 100 mi., but I
    might look for a job playing a doctor on T.V.

436.15try some plastic-lined riding shorts (honest!)SUSHI::KMACDONALDtime to squeeze the donuts!Fri Sep 11 1987 16:448
A bit late (that's what vacations are for, to get you behind on NOTES :-) )
but bagging the briefs was the right plan. I got some cycling shorts
from Palo Alto catalog (I think...) a couple seasons back with a fluffed
polypropylene pad instead of chamois pads. WAHOO, the chamois hit the
trash real soon after that. Feel softer, and don't tend to get stiff like
chamois can. Wear well, too .......
