413.0. "Shamrock Games" by MURPHY::MOLLIN () Wed Aug 05 1987 20:31

This past weekend the Shamrock Games were held in Worcester, Ma.There
were a number of team and individual sports. Bicycle racing was
one of the sports. There were six separate races. They varied from
6 to 25 laps around a .9mile course at Elm Park. I was talked into
riding in the Citzens B race, even though I've never raced or trained
for racing, and have a sport-touring bike. It was quite an experience.
At least as exciting as entering a 10K running race and finishing
at the back of the pack. The only negative was not being able to
go fast enough to keep from being lapped. However, they did allow
those of us who were lapped to finish the race. The winning time
for 6 laps was 11:45. I finished about 3 minutes and a lap and a
half later. I then stayed for the rest of the day to watch the Citizens
A, USCF Womens, Cat IV, Cat III, and Cat I & II races. This is the
first bike racing I've seen and it was exciting and impressive to
    watch.

For those of you interested in riding in or watching Citizens races
the New England Bicycle Racing Association handed out a schedule
of N.E. Citizen's Bike Races for Aug.- Oct. It's too long for me
to enter here. If anyone wants a copy send me mail at Murphy::Mollin
and I'll send it to you via interoffice mail.

I was there, too. It's the first bicycle race I've been to and I
really enjoyed it. I only had time to stay for the first few races,
and I couldn't find the guy in the pink jersey who was handing out
the citizens race info. I would appreciate you sending me this
info; I'll send you my mail stop.

That event really has me thinking about trying my hand at racing
next year. What would you say the average and max speeds were for
the citizens B race? Do you plan on racing again?

Did you see those three bikes wipe out at the start of the A race?
Their wheels were bent like pretzels! That must of been a
    tremendous disappointment for them.

    Regards,
    Denis

Race Results Worcester Crit.....DEC Hudson/Worcester Road Club members

Super day for racing. Weather was perfect, about 80 degrees and low
humidity.

The womens race was well attended. Betsy King who just returned from the
Tour De Feminine in France was there as well as Liz Larson who is also a
National Team member. There were about 40 women at the start line at
1:15. The field stayed together for the whole race and Marion Garver,
who works here in Hudson and is on th Worcester Road Club team competing
in only her second criterium rode a super race and placed 11th. ps she's
35 years young!

There was no Vets race this day so I signed up for the Senior I II
III race.

The Senior I II III race because of the number of entrants was split up
into two races a Senior III race and a Senior I II race. This was fine
with me. I did not want to ride in a field of over 170 riders. As it was
there were 83 Senior III,s my race. The field stayed together for the whole
race so it ended up being a field sprint finish. I placed in the middle
of the field some where. The average speed for this four corner crit was
28mph.
