401.0. "Finish coming off wheel?" by XCELR8::DELORIEA () Thu Jul 23 1987 17:48

    	I resently bought a Centurion Lemans which has black anodized
    wheels. The problem is that the finish is coming off the rim where
    the brake pads hit it. Is this common? Are these wheels defective?
    My wifes bike has black finish on her wheels but no scrub marks
    like I have on the wheel. We have the same brand of wheel,but I
    have different brakes. Mine are shimmano composit brake pads.
    The finish is not flaking off but wearing off and it looks kind
    of ugly.

There are anodized wheels, and HARD anodized wheels. I imagine the HARD
anodized ones hold their finish longer, but I doubt if its forever. Its the
anodizing that gives the rim its color. Your brakes are apparently more
abrasive than your wife's. The number of miles on the bikes and your
differing braking styles may also contribute to different wear patterns. I
have a nice set of wheels (Mavic MA40's) that are doing the same thing.

    Me too ! I have Mavic GP4 with Shimano brake blocks, and the black
    is wearing down. Seems like .1 is right...it must be normal

401.3It's quite normalOBLIO::GENTFri Jul 24 1987 11:599
    I have used GP4's and my son has Crono's. My brakes are Modolo's
    which are sintered style and he has used Dura-Ace. All our rims
    have lost the anodising over the three to four years that we have
    had them - typical mileage about 2.5K per year. If you look
    at wheels at bike races or similar group get togethers you'll notice
    that most rims have lost their anodising in places. It does not
    seem to affect the rim strength or stopping power.
