384.0. "Joe Jones Triple Crown races" by ULTRA::SEIDEN (Ken Seiden) Wed Jul 08 1987 17:29

Has anyone done this series before?
There's a race this Sunday, July 12, in Keene, NH.
Two other races follow: one in late July, the other in
    August.
These are "citizen" races only, i.e. no USCF riders allowed.
The race this Sunday includes a Citizens A race and a B race (for
    inexperienced racers).
The A race is approx. 40 miles, and I believe the B race is approx.
    20 miles.
Any ideas what kind of pace one can expect from "the pack" in
    such a race?

    HI:

WHEN I HAVE RIDDEN IN A LARGE GROUP ABOUT 2,000 RIDERS. THERE ARE
VERY FAST RIDERS, AND MODERATE PACED ONES 12-13 MILES A HOUR. THE
TROUBLE IS SOME ARE NOT COURTEOUS, AND DON'T TELL YOU THEY ARE PASSING
YOU, AND IT ALMOST CAUSES A COLLISON. BUT SOMEHOW YOU WILL MANAGE
TO SURVIVE AND HAVE A GREAT DEAL OF FUN.

I think this race is part of the White Mountain Series, and if that's
the case, the pace is FAST (at least in the front pack). This is
second hand info from my husband, since I have never even seen the
front pack, once the race gets going.

I don't think there have been any accident-free races that I've
been in, so be careful! The accidents seems to be caused mostly
by inexperienced racers. This might not be much of a problem in
the A race if the inexperienced people are in the B race.

Jay will be up there Sunday, so if you see a fast guy with lots
of gray hair, say hi to him!

    Good luck,
    Kathy
