352.0. "Bottom Bracket/crank compatibility" by SHRBIZ::BROWNM (Mike Brown DTN 237-3477) Wed Jun 17 1987 18:05

    Can I change my bottom bracket without replacing the crank set?
    I have a TREK "400" with SAKAE "Super Custom" bb and crank.

    Thanks.

352.1I replaced mine... You can, too!RAINBO::WASSERJohn A. WasserWed Jun 17 1987 18:116
> Can I change my bottom bracket without replacing the crank set?

	Yes. The bottom bracket set must be compatible with the
	threading of your frame (English, Italian, French, other)
	and your cranks (the tapers are slightly different on
	different brands/models of crank).
352.2Check tapers and cups for compatability too...MENTOR::REGHusqvarna Sonata fur A# saw und voodWed Jun 17 1987 18:5521
    re (.1 re .0)	...and make sure the tapers are compatible too.

        If you don't the potential problems can range between:-

    Crank goes too far onto spindle causing chainstay/crank interference,
    cranks may not tighten down on spindle.

    Crank wobbles on spindle, even when torqued down real hard, may
    not be noticeable immediately, but will show up soon as creaking
    noises and a tendency to work loose very frequently.

    Crank may actually split around its squared hole, this is can be
    thought of as the "wood splitter effect".

	Some horrid combinations of the above, any of which could be
    very expensive.

    	(Oh, cup depth varies too {leave this one alone Gary M.}, so
    check that too)

    As .1 and .2 suggest, the bottom line is, yes, if it's a replacement
    of the same brand and type, but if not, you're asking for trouble
    except in special circumstances. Some cranks are copies of one another,
    ie. the Sugino Mighty Compe is compatible with Campy Nuovo Record.

352.4Check compatibility very carefully...SUSHI::KMACDONALDMacarooned on a Dessert IslandThu Jun 18 1987 13:078
Often (not often enough) the M.O. catalogs have charts of which bottom
brackets fit which of their cranksets. The most common are the Campy -
compatible B.B's and cranksets. Be careful - some of the manufacturers
(Sugino comes to mind) have about 42 styles and sizes of B.B's to go
with their cranks, none mutually compatible. Also note that in most
cases, double and triple cranks require different B.B's.

352.5Sutherland's might be a place to checkWARLRD::JBINGHAMJohn BinghamWed Jun 24 1987 00:053
    For compatibility check Sutherland's Handbook for Bicycle
    Mechanics. It lists compatible pieces. I haven't gotten
    the newest one but older ones were good on what fit what.
