261.0. "Check your seat bolts..." by RANCHO::HOLT (Robert Holt SW Engr @UCO) Sat Apr 11 1987 17:13
I was pedaling down Hwy 1 (near Molera State Park) in top gear
wind at my back and at top speed when suddenly the seat attachment
bolt breaks. I nearly broke my tailbone as I came down on the
back wheel. On investigation the cause turned out to be fatigue
of the seat attachment bolt. The seatpost was the DuraAce EX,
which I aquired in 1980. This bolt did not look to be of a
sufficiently hardened steel, nor was it of sufficient diameter
to resist being flexed across its entire width. Be warned, this
could happen to you...try riding a bike with only a seatpost!
Speaking of DuraAce, how have others liked it? I didn't care
much for how it shifted after the chain aquired road grit, nor
could one easily tighten the derailleur levers.
