(I know its early to be thinking about this, but did you hear the
       weekend weather report??!!)...

Does anyone know the dates of this year's Pan Mass Bike Challenge?
How can one get information about registering for it?

    thanks,

Many of the noters have ridden the PMC in past years. This year's ride is
scheduled for the weekend before Labor Day. Details for the signup will
be coming out soon. I intend to ride this year with 4 members of my family,
maybe more. Two of us will be on the new Counterpoint, I hope.
Last year, I was part of the planning and executing committee, and expect
to play some kind of a role this year as well. I will guarantee to keep
you all posted when things start happening. I will be looking for folks
to ride as well as for folks to help run the event. So don't worry. I'll
let you all know!

Call 617-965-9624 or write po box 9, Newton Centre, 02159 asap.
In '85 there were 400+ riders and in '86 there were 700+ riders.
The alumni will get preference this year and will be the first to
get entry forms and I would guess about 500 will return. That leaves
room for about 300 new people as there is an 800 rider limit. The
entry forms for '87 have not been sent out yet. So get in touch
with Billy Starr (above) and put in your request early. The field
is limited by the size of the dorms and the ferry.

    Good Luck

224.3FUND RAISING STRATEGYCHEAPR::NORTONWed Apr 01 1987 15:4720
Well I'm psyched. The PMC newsletter came in the mail yesterday.
My $75 deposit is on its way, and I'm starting to get pledges.

The minimum this year is up to $500. Last time I rode I got $500
and got DEC to match for a total of $1000. But I need help with
my fund-raising strategy. Up till now, my strategy is basically
to ask for $5 from each of my 100 closest friends. This gets real
time consuming. (I'd ask for more, but these aren't rich friends.)

What is a better way to get pledges? I figure bike shops get pretty
inundated with requests, so I should probably look elsewhere. Should
I ask the bank that owns 95% of my house? Or the local grocery
    store?

If anybody has done this successfully, I'd love to know how.

    Thanks,
    Kathy

I tell my friends that I wil NOT ride 200 or so miles for a $5 pledge.
If they want to give $5, I recommend they mail it in themselves. This year
my minimum will be $25...given the $500 limit, the cause, and the pain I
will be enduring.
I usually make a healthy pledge, and use DEC stock to pay it off. Less painful
that way than having to take it out of this weeks check. Then I ask my dentist,
the doctors I know, and a few real generous friends. This year I hope to
get $2k counting the DEC match.
One year, I was low on my pledges, and they accepted the DECmatch as part
and parcel of my fundraising, which means you'd only have to get $250 worth
of matchable funds.

Is your daughter gonna ride this year?

224.5banks, for sureNOVA::FISHERThu Apr 02 1987 08:112
Banks all have a fund for such things. I don't know what the terms
are for getting them to part with it.
224.6use email?HPSCAD::EVATue Apr 14 1987 18:319
Are there any DEC policies against sending out an electronic message
to solicit pledges to a large mailing list? Do most people just
walk around and ask their colleages in person, put up the pledge
sheet near a coffee machine, or send out electronic mail to ask
    for pledges? Or other suggestions?

    thanks from a first-timer,

re: .-1, the notes file, HUMAN::DIGITAL, indicates several people's
feelings about this sort of thing and discusses the policy as well.

I'd stick with people I know and fell like approaching personally
rather than sending out mail to "Occupant" or, worse, "User".

One approach I've seen is to put an appeal for pledges in your NOTES
    or MAIL personal name, eg,
"Sponsor me in the Walk for Hunger"
Friends tell me that they've gotten lots of positive feedback and
a few unexpected pledges by using this approach.

    Good luck!

The Pan Mass Challenge is s a 2-day, 192 mile bicycle ride from
Sturbridge, MA to Provincetown, MA. It is held annually to benefit
the Jimmy Fund. This will be my first one, but from what I've been
told, it is tremedously well organized, follows a nice relatively
traffic free route, and most of all is a lot of fun! I can't wait!
224.13PAN MASS CHALLENGE '88CHEAPR::NORTONTue Apr 19 1988 13:2913
I just got a couple of hundred brochures for '88 Pan Mass Challenge
in the mail. If anybody will be going to a bike shop, club meeting,
etc., in the near future and would be willing to bring a supply,
    please let me know.

This year's PMC will take place the weekend of August 13 and 14.
It's 194 miles, almost the same as last year. This year the minimum
is up to $600. That's not as bad as it sounds, considering we only
have to get $300 and with DEC's matching contribution, there's $600!

    Anybody want to sponsor me??

I have a question on the matching funds. Who is the match funds form
made out to? "The Jimmy Fund or "The PMC-Jimmy Fund"? is there a
    difference?

    Thanks, Tim B.

Well, now that I asked a few other questions about the '88 PMC,
I was wondering if anyone else planning on riding this year?

My name is Tim Brightman and I'm a contractor working in SHRewsbury.

    Hi,

I'm riding the Pan Mass this year. I also rode last year. It's
a pity this note is buried down here. I had to search for it.
I'm starting a new note which we can use as a Pan-Mass 1988 Registry
and I've added the keyword "PANMASS".

Re. Tim's question : I found it simpler to ask people to make checks
out to me, and I take care of the DEC matching contribution paperwork.
(I fill out one single form, as if I was donating $300 myself).
It makes things simpler both for your contributors and for D-F.

I arrived home yesterday to find my information package, for the 1989,
10th anniversary, Pan-Mass Challenge in the mail.

With it a came rush of adrenalin, a case of the goose bumps and flash
backs to last years ride.

So, for those interested..............

(portions quoted from the Spokesman, newsletter of the PMC)

This years event will include the "Day Tripper" Div. "A 'Day Tripper' is
someone who rides on Saturday (only) from Sturbridge to Middleboro - 80
miles. A 'Day Tripper' must raise a min. of $350 (half price)." The
new division will be able "to accommodate 300 more cyclists..."

"...the biggest bicycling fund-raiser in the nation. Last year the PMC
raised $850,000 for cancer treatment and research programs at
Dana-Farber, bringing its nine year total to nearly $2.5 million."

"In 1989, (Billy) Starr is adding something new - a one-day 80-mile
trip from Sturbridge to Middleboro. He is also striving to reach
another PMC milestone. 'I like round numbers and lots of zeros,' he
said. 'It's our 10th year, and we're hoping to raise $1 million.'"
