| For inside information:
DEC people are very involved - I'm on the organizing committee
and in charge of exhibits, and Ed Fisher is the head of the Rides
Committee NOVA::FISHER.
The HOT TIP for NEAR is that by paying a bit more (or maybe
less, if you get 5 or more people together) you can avoid the usual
dorm room and get an apartment with kitchen and bath! It's $45 for
the weekend for the dorm room and $220 for 4 to 6 people for the
apartment. If you want to do it 'in style', you can opt for the
New England Center for elegant dining, and a dinner cruise too.
This is going to be one nice event.
For those who are not familiar with GEARs, NEARs, etc:
These are major bike rallys with 500 to 1500 bike riders attending.
They are usually held at a large university during the summer for
the cheap housing and mass food service. There are rides from 5
to 125 miles at most of them, usually 20 or more different rides
to choose from, from easy (can bring small kids) to killers. Your
time at the event will be absolutely filled, forcing you to make
decisions about which ride, workshop, meal, social event, exhibit,
etc. to go to and what to pass up. Try it! - Chris

| Info on rides, workshops, etc are contained in a booklet that you
recieve at Registration, when you get to the event. For detailed
ride info, you might bug the Rides Chairman. A one-covers-all
registration fee covers rides, workshops, exhibits, etc. You pay
for meals and housing as seperate packages. The total for the weekend,
if you are staying in a dorm, runs about $130. Fancy dining, boat
cruises, apartments, etc are more. The rides are, like most club
rides, for [hmmm.... what are club rides for ? ] pleasure, health,
social, senic, etc. (not competitive)(much). I think the event
registration fee is about 15 to 20$. A GEAR is the same kind of
thing, but sponsored by LAW and an LAW affiliated club. GEAR-UP
will be held on Long Island two weeks before NEAR - see Bicycle
USA for information, the Almanac for registration forms. NEAR
differes in that LAW is not involved (so far, mayby in the future)
and that not just one club, but many clubs participate in the event's
organizational chores. - Chris
