186.0. "Fit Kit frame fit?" by WARLRD::JBINGHAM (John Bingham) Mon Dec 08 1986 17:39

I discussed frame fit with a local bicycle shop and they told me
that the Fit Kit recommended measurements were different than the
ones that Dave Moulton's work sheets recommend. The Fit Kit
recommended a larger frame on the few that they had worked up both
    for.

Has anyone bought a frame sized using the Fit Kit? After riding
a frame sized with it what are the opinions on how good the fit
    was?

186.1fit kit is ok by me.NOVA::FISHERTue Dec 09 1986 12:176
The fit kit recommended 55cm. I have bought and ridden 55cm frames
over twelve thousand miles in the last two years, improved my speed
and hillclimbing, changed my opinions and usage of gearing, etc. I
would say that I am pleased.

I agree with Ed. I used the fit kit 3 years ago and bought a new bike
using the suggested measurements. The result has been that the new bike
is more comfortable and just feels better than any other bike I've
used.

I'm sure it has also improved my performance.

Does the Fit Kit sizing apply to road bikes only? What are the
changes, if any, for ATB frames?

Bill Farrell, the inventor of the fit kit, was a cat 1 road racer.
He did all of his research by observing & studying road racers.
He has never made any attempts to define fit on anything but road
bikes, whether racing or touring. He will tell you that his numbers
apply to fit and reach but I think the "more erect" nature of the
ATB rider would cause sufficient differences that the kit numbers
would be irrelevant. For example, the kit has no compensation for
the handlebar differences and the relationship that that has to
stem length. However, he is always upgrading the kit and such a
thing could be right around the corner.

Bill Farrell is still a licensed Cat 1 rider, and is active in the
New England area. He frequently rides the Veterans race and the
    1-2 race afterwards.

Plan on at least one size smaller ATB frame than you normally use,
assuming your current road bike fits you perfectly. I'm 5'11",
ride a 53-54 cm road bike and a 19" ATB which I feel is still a
    bit too large.
