                    California Peddler
                    ==================
                      by tim allard

During this years Digital United Way Campaign I will be
bicycling to raise money through pledges. Having participated in fun runs,
raffles, pie eating contest and holding back crouds at the "dunk the manager"
tank, I had to find something more exciting and challenging. An idea came
to me while vacationing in the National Parks of California. Having driven the
central plains (with endless farmlands that seem larger than New England) and
hiking the Sierra mountains surrounded by enchanting National Parks, all that
was left was the coast.

This fall I will bicycle the California coast, from north to south, to
raise money for the Digital United Way Campaign. The trip will be Sept. 27 -
Oct. 12. I expect to average 80-100 miles per day. The distance is 1000
miles.

I will be asking Digital employees to pledge money towards this event.
The pledge amounts will be based on one penny per mile, for the total distance
I ride. 1 penny = 10 dollars, 2 cents = 20 dollars and so on. Although I am
based in the Woburn facility I would be delighted to receive other employee
pledges. I will coordinate this through the United Way rep. in Woburn. We
will set up a procedure and announce it via the mass Digital media. If you
would like to know more infomation on the trip my node is; FSLENG::ALLARD.

I would like to thank the bike club for sharing this artical with
its members and look forward to hearing from you. As a member of the
running and skiing club, I also enjoy reading about employees who contribute
there time and tallents after work.

                                           regards,

                                           tim

                  **** S Q U E A K Y B R A K E S ****

Squeaking brakes are annoying, and someone sent in a
request to USENET for advice on what to do, and published the
       responses.

            Here are the suggestions:

        o Toe-in the brakes.

"Most cantilever brakes allow you to adjust "toe-in",
as it is called, but with others you will have to remove
the wheel and the brake pad, grab brake arm with an
adjustable wrench, and carefully bend the front inward.
(If you bend the back in, you may stop more suddenly than
           you ever imagined!)...

I've done toe-in quite successfully with Campys and
Dia Compes. Alas, there is no known cure for Mafacs.
(Heard on a club ride just after a long descent: "I hear
           you have Mafac brakes?")"

"The most likely cause is the angle with which the
brake pads hit the rim. If the rear of the pad hits the
rim before the front of the pad, the pad will vibrate very
quickly causing the squeaking sound. To alleviate the
problem, just bend the caliper arm (using a crescent
wrench) until the front of the pad hits the rim before the
rear of the pad. Be careful when you bend the arm. Do it
           SLOWLY!!!"

"Park makes a brake toeing tool, which is essentially
a wrench to twist the arm. A crescent wrench will
accomplish the same thing, though not as easily since the
handle is parallel to the wheel."

        o Brake shoe technology.

"Try a different brake shoe. I've heard the new
"high-tech" shoes don't squeak. If all this sounds
daunting, you might just want to put up with it for a
while. Many shoes will squeal when new, then settle down
once they start to break in to the rim."

"By now you've seen the articles suggesting that you
adjust your brake shoes to give some toe-in. If you don't
want to bend your brake arms, you might be interested in
Mathauser brake shoes, which, although expensive
($12-$15/set), allow adjustment of toe angle (as well as
every other angle). These are available for non-cantilever
brakes, and there may be other shoes with the same
           adjustment (possibly Aztecs)."

        o Soap and water

"The most common cause of squeaking on properly toed
brakes is old (hardened) pads and/or dirty rims. Don't
grease your rims, but clean them if necessary, and if all
else fails, try new pads (properly toed)."

"... a common cause is oil or other contaminants on
the rims. A little ammonia on a rag will clean up the
           rims."

        o Spokes.

"I have stopped the noise from my brakes by taking the
time to individually tighten/loosen the spokes on the
           wheel."

After reading these, I decided to try to fix my squeaky
brakes. All I did was toe-in the shoes and use ammonia to
clean the rims. There was a barely visible film on the rims
that took some rubbing to get off. The result is no squeak.
My brake shoes are very worn and should be replaced, but don't
seem to be the cause of the squeak.

                               /Charlie Crabb

Phil, there are showers and lockers in MR03-2.
I will likely be there, altho a meeting I must attend MAY go past 6:00.
I intend to hang around the main entrance looking for suspicious characters
on bikes. You'll recognize me, I'll be the innocent looking person on a
bike, just hanging around at 6:00pm.

The real Gary Miller? Haven't seen [you] him in an awful-long time! I plan to
attend, cuz I'm already here (MRO3) first off, and my bike is out in the
parking lot sitting atop my car.

To find the locker room: 2nd floor, right-wing, in the men's room about halfway
down the hall.

re .0 : Squeaky Mafac brakes.......

Mafac brakes are quite susceptible to de-squeaking by toeing them in
properly. I've fixed lots thru the years, usually takes more tries than
other brakes though.
