76.0. "Advice Wanted - Northwest Bike Touring" by JETSAM::HANAUER (Mike Hanauer, 223-5991, PKO1/F3) Thu Jun 05 1986 16:37

Am taking 3 weeks in July to tour Washington State and British Columbia.
Flying into Seattle, out of Vancouver. Only known is to see Expo.

Would appreciate any advice on roads or routes, suggestions for places
to see, advice on accomodations (hostels, campgrounds, inns, etc), and
anything else that may be pertinent.

Thanks to all.	Mike

The suggestion that I have is not exactly in British Columbia but may
be close enough for you to consider. That is the Ice Fields Parkway
which goes between Banff and Jasper in western Alberta. It would be very
hard for anyone to convince me that there is a better ride in North America.
For more details on the Ice Fields Parkway, check out note #9.

If you are interested, I would be glad to answer any questions.

    I did this ride.

The best roads were North out of Vancouver B.C. along the coast.
Beautiful fiords with little ferries to take you across.

After a ways you can take a ferry West to Vancouver Island then
ride South down the island to Victoria (a great city). Check out
the Empress Hotel at night with all the tiny lights lighting it
    up.

Also, there are great hiker/biker camping areas in Washington and
Oregon. Lots of good company around the campfire at night.

Another vote for the ferry - I took the ferry from Vancouver to
Victoria, then on to Seattle, rather than flying back from Vancouver
to Boston. Including the cost of the ferry, dinner in Seattle (would
have gotten it on the plane), overnight stay at a real nice place
in Seattle - still saved about $40 on airfare (national 'stead of
    international)
