64.0. "Mt Washington Auto Road closed to bikes" by BANZAI::FISHER () Thu May 22 1986 11:44

The Mt Washington Auto Road Company (a privately owned business) has
elected to close the Auto Road to bicycles except for Race Day -- which is
usually the first or second Saturday after Labor Day.

The word I get from a friend whose wife is in the family that owns the road
is that it was a matter of safety as well as a matter of a few spoiling it
for everyone. Some cyclists had apparently scared the daylights out of
some motorists. I always thought the Auto Road's coach drivers were the
scary ones.

Another one of the few great challenges available to bikekind has been
eliminated (a few tears are appropriate at this point).

I do not know what the penalties would be for driving to the first parking
spot and riding from there would be!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

64.1Climbing Mt. WashingtonMODULE::SCHNARECHARLIE SCHNAREThu May 22 1986 14:3820

Last year on race day some not so bright mountain bikers decided to race down

the mountain road and as you noted they scared the daylights out some drivers

because they were passing everything in sight on the way down. The decision to

close the road to bikers was made that day and announced at the awards ceremony.

So a few spoiled it for the many. If your interested in doing this climb anyone

may register for the race on race day but you all can climb at your own pace

and not have to be concerned about traffic because the road will be closed

to cars during this time which is an added safety factor.

The challenge is still available so go for it!!
64.2I suppose it'll doNOVA::FISHERFri May 23 1986 12:5916
It's just the "this is the one day you can do it, take it or leave it" that
bugs me. It was more fun to try to get a day with 80 mi visibility,
reasonable temperatures and winds and go for it. (I got it 2 out of 3
tries.)

The "closed to auto traffic" bit is a limited period of time. What is it?
Someone told me that it's an hour after the last official race start. That's
better than nothing.

I guess I'll just have to go for Mt Mitchell.

There's a Mt bike race up Pike's a few days before the Roads at the World's
this year (and yes I will be there, but maybe not for the race -- no Mt
bike).
