How many people belong to the Digital Bike Club, anyway?
Turnouts for rides I've been on are usually in the single
digits, often very close to zero. Is that a local (LTN)
	phenomenon?

	Any demographics avaiable?

for those of us in the worldwide noter registry, would entries
posted give at least a state in the reply heading? It would serve
    a wonderful service.

    Thank you kindly...

42.4CHARLES RIVER WHEELMENJETSAM::HANAUERMike Hanauer, 223-5991, PK01/F3Fri Apr 18 1986 15:1229
The Charles River Wheelmen have a rides program throughout the year.
Rides are offered every Sunday morning, starting from various spots,
usually around route 128.

From April through November, rides are arrowed with at least two loops,
nominally 15-30 and 30-50 miles. There is a lunch stop and the leader
always sweeps.

From December through March, the rides are less structured, depending on
the weather and the whim of those who come. If it's real cold or messy,
we may spend more time at a Friendly than in the saddle. "Frostbite"
rides are fun, really, and a lot less boring than certain indoor
substitutes!

We also have invitationals, Centuries in May and September (25, 50, 62
and 100 miles; patches and food), and socials too. Many rides have a
party after the ride. And I have to mention our famous New Year's Day
ride which starts at the Boston Common.

All are invited, membership not required. Rides are often announced in
the Boston Globe on Fridays.

CRW has about 450 members, about a third are women in spite of our name.
A ride on a nice day will usually attract about 100 people. Even winter
(frostbite) rides rarely attract less than ten people.

If you want more info, feel free to contact me. I'm a regular.

    re: .2

The Digital Bike Club doesn't really exist any more. It existed
a few years ago as an official DEC sponsored club. It stopped existing
officially when no one wanted to be a club officer. It exists today
informally, a newsletter is still circulated on the net. If some
people will volunteer some time, we can officially exist again.

    	Hi Eric,

    		I'll volunteer "some" time.

I think we need a critical mass of 5 or 6 working volunteers to each
take a task and be responsible for it for a year.

Our biggest mistake last time was leaving it ALL to Kathy, who did such
a super job that nobody wanted to "follow her act", so to speak.

Wanna get an organizing/brain_storming meeting together ?

I have always been a supporter of the DEC bike club, and will help where
appropriate. I will not be available for rides, normally, since I spend
most weekends on Cape Cod.

The BABC is a politically oriented group that in the past has dealt
with the bikes on the T issues and the improvement of road and bikepath
conditions. A large portion of the members use their bikes for
    commuting and don't own cars.

The GBC chapter of AYH offers a year-round program. Bicycle rides
(mostly Saturdays, some weeknights in the summer) are held from March
through November. In the winter, we offer day XC ski trips.

Year-round, we feature day hikes. In the summer months, we've
    started canoeing and sailing programs.

We offer weekend trips (approx. 2 per month) in whatever activity
    is in season.

An individual membership is $25 for the first year and $15 to renew
each year after the first year. Family memberships are $35 for the
first year and $25 to renew each year after that.

The best part about AYH is the network of hostels you'll have access
to when traveling around (by bicycle or otherwise). There are a couple
dozen or so in New England, including several on Cape Cod and the islands.
They average $8-9 per night in cost.

    All ages welcome.

Does this group still exist and is this still the address? Seems to me I got
a mailing from them maybe 3 years ago but didn't hold on to it.

Thanks!

Note 1982.15 says the P.O. box is 2398, not 398, and I don't
have the newsletter with me. (Someone else asked about NVP
a couple of days ago and was answered, but I can't find that
exchange.)
