27.0. "Free Latex Tube Offer" by LSMVAX::MILLER () Fri Feb 21 1986 14:17

Free Latex Tubes
I have at least 4 latex tubes. I ordered them from a mail order firm before
I knew what I was getting. I'm strictly a tourist. After enduring 5 punctures
in one ride to work, I decided to find out what was going wrong. Talk about
stupidity! I'll never buy a component based upon price again. These tubes
were the most expensive, therefore the'd be the longest lasting, right???

End of the story: I have about 4 of them left, haven't been used. First one
to ask for them *VIA THIS NOTES FILE* will get them. Free. Just promise not
to laugh at me.

I don't get to read the notes file more than once each week, so enter your
name and mail address, and I'll get back to you after I read the file next.

Unless someone can tell me why I shouldn't put them on my new
wheels, I'd like to try 'em.

Will they work with the Turbo S tires?

Yes, they work great with Turbo or other narrow section clinchers.
Latex tubes take a good deal of care to install. You should throw away the
rim strip and use rim tape or electrical tape to keep the spoke heads from
rubbing against the tube. They're also very flexible, they don't hold their
shape like butyl tubes and thus are easily pinched between the tire and rim.
You also have to use talcum powder on them to keep internal friction down.

I don't know why you had so many flats. Were they really flats? When
you tried to put air in them after the "flat" did it hold? Latex tubes are
much more porous than butyl tubes and they go flat after several days. My
best racing tubulars with the thinnest latex tubes go flat after 24 hours.
The proper procedure with these latex clincher tubes is to pump them up to
full pressure before riding, and bleed them down to 60 lbs. or so after the
ride. Allowing the high pressure to stay inside the tube weakens it over
time.

If they're too much hassle use the new thin butyl tubes, like the
Specialized Ultralight. They're a little heavier, and don't ride as smooth
as the latex, but don't go flat on you either. If you're using a standard
garden variety butyl tube with thick walls you're not getting maximum perfor-
mance out of the tires. You're probably not getting flats, either!!!

The spoke heads punctured me 5 times in 12 miles. I had no Bike News file
to read such as 27.2. Even then, for a rider such as I, talcum, bleeding
and other procedures of that sort are not the kind of performance I want
to put myself thru for Performance. I cranks the pedals and steers the bike,
and hopes we gets there before the muscles say ENOUGH. The thicker the tube,
the fewer the flats the lesser the hassle the better I feel.

Ed you gets the prize, I guess. Did you say you want them? How do I get ahold
of you to set a pickup point?
I will be away from the office all next week, and won't be around until March
3.

Help!!!Moderator!!!!
Who gets em, Ed or Reg???

Tell you what, I'll cut each one in half and give one half to each, right?

27.6CHEAPR::NORTONTue Feb 25 1986 13:486
Well Gary, you're in a pickle now!! By rights, I'd say Ed gets them cause
he was the first one to ask for them. But since you've got 4, how about
2 each?

But then again, will they make Reg any faster than he already is? In that
case, Ed should get them all!
27.7MENTOR::REGTue Feb 25 1986 13:5812
OK, my fault. I hadn't read the previous replies and just
jumped in, all greedy like. Ed gets 'em.

Well, I took friday off see, 'cos it was my birthday. When we
were kids they said your birthday doesn't count if you stay in bed all
day - so I figured that my getting older wouldn't count with you guys
if I didn't come to work. If Kathy is faster than me this year I'll
just blame it on the tubes (not on getting older !)

OK, The moderator has spaketh. and so has the old man. Reg, did you know

that DEC just decided that employees with 12 or more years, celebrating
their 50th birthday on valentines Day, get that day as an extra holiday?
I took it this year!!!

Ed, I'll read this note file again on Monday. Please put your phone ##
in so I can call you and make the necessaries.

Seems to me that Ed could let Reg have a couple, for lacing his wheels,
don't you think, Moderator? At LEAST one for offering.

Watch, I'll go home and find out that my wife had decided to clean my closet
and found these old tubes that have been hanging around for a year , and
decided to..........

Naw! Never happen. She's never done that before....

except for the time she....

Lemme see now, over 12 years with dec... Yep, I qualify.

Ummmm... Celebrates their birthday on Valentine's Day...
Well, I sorta "celebrated" it one day early this year - I suppose I
could lie for an extra day off, but that would look like I'm a whole
week older than I really am...

	Errrr... 50th you say ? FORGET IT ! I ain't gonna lie
myself THAT OLD for a lousy extra day off. :-) (Not even next year)

I think it would be quite fair if Reg and I split the booty.
Sorry, I've been absent from this file for a few days!

Right, but, Ed, if you don't tell Gary how to contact you, you'll lose,
remember? Besides, Reg is right in the next building, and Gary could
just have him come over and pick up the tubes if he brought them in to
the office..

	Re: .11

Is this the same Tom Blinn that plays,

"Lets you and him fight" in the (motor)cycles notes file ?
