12.0. "Ride Announcements" by NEPTUN::DEHAHN () Thu Jan 02 1986 18:20

	This note is for planning rides. I will start a separate note
for races when the season starts to come into shape.

	Anyone for a short ride this weekend, if it doesn't snow???

	I'm up for it. Nashoba starts out from the Sheraton
Boxborough at 10:00 every saturday, they X-C Ski or bike according to
the weather, distance and pace according to who shows. Since I just
got new skis from Santa it will either shine or rain. Would you like
to start from there with them, or shall we make up our own ride ?

	"Fixed", you say ? Somewhere else I mentioned that I don't
spin very well, I think my lowest combination is about a 68 inch
(48 x 19; weird huh ?) Anyway, it would really be nice to ride fixed
with someone else and stay together more, I hate getting dropped by
the freewheelers on sharp turns and long down hills, even though I
usually catch them on the climbs while they tangle their chains.

12.2NEPTUN::DEHAHNFri Jan 03 1986 11:2414
	Ok, 48-19 then. I have all the cogs from 21 to 13 in 1/8". It's more
important to be riding the same gear as every other fixed gear rider. I
haven't set it up yet, but it should be a trivial matter to do so tonite.
Let's let this weather situation develop today. If there's snow, I'll pull
out the X-C skis. Otherwise the fixed. I really think that Sunday will work
out better for all reasons, although I'm not counting out a Saturday ride.
I'd rather get together with a few folks and not a large group. I have a
friend who is planning to ride with me this weekend, so ther would be at
least three.

	Well... ...I hate to be accused of stating the obvious but,
...it looks UGLY ! out there. My guess is that this stuff is all
going to freeze tonight, except where the towns make brine bath
puddles for us. Unless something very different happens soon I would
say that X-C Ski is out too, so... ...another time ?

12.4CRW FROSTBITE RIDESJETSAM::HANAUERMike...Bicycle~to~Ice~CreamThu Dec 04 1986 18:0225

12.6JETSAM::HANAUERMike...Bicycle~to~Ice~CreamFri Dec 05 1986 17:267
Distances depend on the weather. Rainy/snowy and very cold/windy
days tend to spend more time in Friendly's, etc., and less time on the
road.

In general, between 10 and 30 miles.

12.8Post St.P's celebration head clearer...MENTOR::REGLife is NOT a spectator sportMon Mar 09 1987 17:1715

    	Not much activity here for a while.

    	Just thought I'd mention the Gamache open house ride, scheduled
    for this sunday, March 15th. Its a short one, about 25 miles IF YOU
    DRIVE TO IT, about a metric if you ride from Hudson or Princeton and
    back, or a century if you go from Hudson to Princeton to Fitchburg to
    Gamache ride to Princeton to Hudson (which I might, if I get to hear
    that anyone in Princeton wants a riding partner, and the weather is OK
    (hint in nested parenthesis)). The roads are usually relatively clear
    of cars on this day, due to a lot of unclear heads caused, I suspect,
    by merriment associated with St P's celebrations the night before.

12.9Tryin' ta plan a little Hills ride; sooooon....MENTOR::REGLife is NOT a spectator sportMon Mar 09 1987 17:3320

    	I have recently driven from Amherst N.H. to Keene, three times
    in the last month or so. Each time it seems to me that it would make
    a nice bike ride, once the snow and ice clear. A number of folks
    seem to have done most of it as part of the Fitchburg century, but
    their loop turns off of 101 to come south on 31 and misses the peak
    of Pac Monadnock (sp ?). Other loops do the Cathedral of the Pines
    trip and approach it from the other side, visiting Jaffrey, but
    I want to ride over the top. We could probably get about a 150 mile
    loop in if we start from almost anywhere in the "Greater Maynard
    Area", preferrably a dec facility for parking reasons.

    	I can't make it this sunday, George Gamache ride, but any sunday
    after that would be fine as long as we don't wait until it gets
    *TOOOO* hot.

What about water stops?
How about century patches for our touring shorts?
Are you going to use your touring gears?

Here he is, folks, over ***forty*** and drumming up a century-and-a-half over
the *ABSOLUTELY* hilliest route New England can offer. I believe the entire
route is uphill...allllllthe way. And knowing Reg, he's liable to do it
with his one speed 52X14!!! (at 100 rpm average).

Seriously....
	Reg, you are the most ambitious rider I ever met. I just

    I rode part of that route, from Amherst NH to Peterborough, over
    the peak (actually a pass between Temple Mtn and Pack Monadnock)
    a couple of years ago. My lowest gear was 42 x 23. It was a bit
    of a grunt with those gears, but not too bad. I'd be interested
    in meeting up with you, probably at the intersection of rt 13 and
    101, depending on the details of your ride, i.e., when, how fast,
    etc.

    hi,

    Regarding this ride over the southern part of NH, count me in.
    I've ridden out from Cambridge, where I live, to do a climb of
    Pac Monadnock (sp?) in a day. The only problem I found was
    that the auto road up Pac was too bumpy to get any traction so
    I had to walk a lot of sections. I would like to wait until
    April to do something like this since I'm currently recovering
    from a minor cycling mishap.

    Oh, come on guys, that's no way near the hilliest route in New
    England. It is interesting if you do the Miller State Park road
    to the summit of Pack whenyoucanseethetopthetoughestpartisinfrontofyou
    Monadnock, but there are plenty of hillier routes.

    Last October 18th, I did Bristol, NH, E 104, N 3, E on 112, N on Bear
    Notch Road, N on 302, S on 3 to Franconia (follow detours) S on 18
    to the old man, then Back N, S on 116, E on 112, W on 118, S 25,
    back to 3 & 104 to Bristol, now that's climbing -- for New England, anyway.

	Mike...could you define 'a couple of memorable hills'? I'm looking to
do my first century, and yours is one I'm considering. I don't want a dead
flat one (too boring) but neither do I want a mountainous one. I'm not
familiar with that area.

12.19TO FINISH IS TO WINJETSAM::HANAUERMike... Bicycle~to~Ice~CreamTue Sep 08 1987 16:4017
Kevin:

Overall the CRW route is moderate terrain, but not flat.
In general it is well suited for a first timer who has done
reasonable preparation.

If you have done at least 80 miles recently, I'd say go for it.
Pace yourself and do it at your own pace.

To qualify for the patch, you have 12 hours - for most first
timers, more than enough time.

Feel free to use all of that time.

    A friend brought this ride to my attention last weekend. Since I am
    only 1 mile from the ride start I have no excuse to not go.

    	SUNDAY  MARCH 18,1990

    Meet: Swift River Elementary School, New Salem, Mass.
    	   Take Rte. 2 west and then Rte. 202 south for about 6 miles.
    	   Take the first right after the New Salem Restaurant. About 1
    	   mile down this road on the left is the school.

    Depart:  10:00am promptly.

    Route: Clock-wise around the Quabbin Resevoir. We will use routes
            202, 122, 32 and 9.  THIS IS NOT A FLAT RIDE.  Approximately
    	    60 miles long.

    The leaders say to be prepared for the weather. Last year the temp.
    dropped 20 degrees and started to rain. A lunch break is planned in
    Ware. They are trying to get a sag but don't have one yet. They said
    if you can't make it you are on your own.

    A number of people from local bike shops and from Gamaches will be

    We'll be on back roads most of the time and cover about 32 miles at a

    Westboro HS is on West Main St. (Route 30) about 1/2 mile west of
    the intersection with Rt. 135. If you need directions or have any

12.30Manditory helmit??NQOPS::THIBODEAUWed Aug 12 1992 13:3111
    Ya know yes I live in NH. so I beleave in these kind of things so on a
    non sanctioned ride how can you make wearing a helmet manditory? In NH
    if a motorcycle rider wants to be IMHO "dumb" and not were a helmet
    then that thier choice. I can see in certain race or organized rides
    where liability could be a factor to mandate helmets but not for a
    Saturday afternoon ride. People will wear them because it's the right
    thing to do.

    Alan

    And yes I were a helmet every where I go. :-)

    This is a club-ride, hence "sanctioned." The club may or may not incur
    liability - usually you sign a waiver anyway - but the club may just
    have a policy of "You ride with us, you wear a helmet" to encourage
    helmet use. Shouldn't be a big deal.

    PS: (more appropriate for the Helmet'88 note?) On yesterday's totally
    unsanctioned Tuesday Triathlete Training ride, there was one rider
    without a helmet. He was fortunately *not* the one who touched wheels
    at 30mph and did a highly airborne header, demolishing his helmet and
    resulting in lots of road rash. The rider walked away from it (but
    will be sore today!).
12.32Didn't sound like a club ride. SorryNQOPS::THIBODEAUWed Aug 12 1992 14:086
    Didn't sound like a club ride sorry. Of course I still think we have to
    many rule and regulations, but like I said I do wear a helmet and
    especially during a race where accidents are very likly I think they
    should be manditory.

    Very reasonable. Agreed - too much regulationism. :-)
12.34HELMET REQUIREMENTS FOR SEVEN HILLS WHEELMENAKOCOA::FULLERMon Aug 17 1992 13:419
    This is simply a policy instated by our club. If two riders touch
    wheels and crash, or someone hits a car, we want the person to survive.
    This was put into our bylaws back around 1985 or so. If you are a
    member of 7HW and have an issue with it, please bring it up a a board
    meeting or regular meeting, those not members shouldn't have an issue
    with it.
