7.0. "Ice Racing" by MENTOR::REG () Thu Dec 19 1985 13:58

The title does NOT mean skidding little chunks of ice across a
frozen pond to see who can get their piece to the other side first,
although that could be fun too.

I am seriously suggesting that we get our little two wheelers
out on a frozen pond or lake and compete around cones for a few laps.
OK I'm crazy, but I did it a few years ago on motorcycles and it was a
lot of fun. The only thing that spoiled it were a few guys with VERY
LOUD (unregistered) bikes and the attention that drew from the police
and registry folks, I don't think we'd have that problem. As long as
you don't have studded tires its fairly safe, you just can't go VERY
fast and rubber knobbies don't cut clothing and flesh like studs do.
Wonderful opportunity to practice bike handling skills and do
something with the off-road bikes while we wait for spring. I am
thinking of the Maynard/Marlborough/Hudson/Stow/Shrewsbury area,
sunday mornings at 10:00, but open to ANY suggestions on alternatives.

When I lived in Marlboro I used to ride my mountain bike on the lake
between Marlboro and Hudson. It was great when there was at least six inches
of snow on the ice, any less than that and it was a bit slippery.
Sure, I'd like to do mountain biking anywhere with some of you folks.

The Boston chapter of the BMWCCA (car club) runs ice races most winters,
usually two or three events (depending on how long the ice lasts) up in
New Hampshire. I suspect that some bicyclists would be welcome. It is
a real challenge to keep a wheeled vehicle of _any_ kind moving smoothly
on the ice. And of course, if there's lots of snow, it gives you a
place to fall that won't break your bones.
