585.0. "Redhat 4.1 and UDB installation problems" by EDWIN::JJ (Jim Johnson - DTN 264-1054 - jj@mko.dec.com) Wed Mar 19 1997 20:44

Hi,

I'm trying to do a fresh install of Redhat 4.1 on a 233mhz UDB.

It was 64MB, an internal 540mb disk and an external rz29.

I've got NT 4.0 on the internal disk and the rz29 has three partitions,
1gb for nt, 2.8gb for linux and .2 for linux swap.

I'm doing the install from a toshiba CD-rom. I'm booting linload and milo
from floppy and the installation starts just fine. I'm using the linload and
milo from the CD. I'm using the noname kernal and ramdisk from the RedHat
site itself.

The problem is when it starts installing the rpm's I start getting errors.
A number of rpms come back saying they did not install successfully and
then on package #122 (I'm installing everything) which is GNU libc, the
whole thing dies, written on screen is "Rebooting system" and it throws me
back to milo. I've looked at the errata and other www sites and can't seem
to find an answer as others have installed successfully on the UDB.

Any ideas or things to try?

Thanks,

JJ

The first thing to try would be to look for any significant diagnostic output
from either the rpm utility or the kernel. If there's a bad disk block
anywhere which is causing problems, for example, then that will show up in the
kernel log.

I can't remember exactly which console gives which output under RH4.1, but the
first four or five consoles between them present the installation utility,
a root shell, stderr output from the installation and kernel console
messages. The usual ALT-F1 to ALT-F10 keypresses swicth between virtual
consoles 1-10, and that should at least let you see if anything is giving
any warnings of problems before things reboot.

Cheers,
 Stephen.

I only have Redhat 4.0 and have never run linux on alpha. I remember
having similar problems on my first install of "the works". You may
want to try installing just the minimum default. Once you get a
running system you can customize all you want.
585.3Bad or damaged disk was the problemEDWIN::JJJim Johnson - DTN 264-1054 - jj@mko.dec.comThu Mar 20 1997 19:4914
Hi,

Yup, bad RA29. Odd, that NT and DU both seem to work ok on it. I'll try
reformating it. I also noticed that fdisk listed different values on two
different rz29's. They were both "C" varients but could be running different
firmware.

Now my only problems is the amd problem and getting X to work but those
problems are pretty well documented.

Thanks for the info about the multiple consoles. I could remember how to
do that.
