578.0. "Linux on a Digital PWS200i" by LEMAN::GABLER () Fri Feb 14 1997 12:41

	Hi,

I tried several times to install Linux on my PWS200i but i never succeed
in it. The goal is to have on the same disk 3 partitions, one with Windows 95,
one with Windows NT, ant the third with Linux.

I tried with different Linux versions.

It seems that the problem is due to the fact that Linux require the
shadow BIOS to be disabled. How can i manage this on my pws2001 ?

Thanks for help

Sorry, I've never even heard of a PWS200i, so I won't be too much help
    to you there.

But, I'm curious about what errors lead you to believe that it's a
shadow BIOS problem. Frankly, I'm not doubting that it could be the
issue, I'm just wondering what the exact symptoms were that lead you to
    that conclusion.

A PWS200i is the Personal Workstation dual-Pentium Pro (?) system sold
    by the SBU.

Maybe GIADEV::DECSTATION could be the place to find out about disabling
    shadowing, then.

In the Ami and Award BIOS's I've had, the shadowing options have been
in the BIOS setup screens, so you might look there.

I'm curious, though, about needing to disable the shadow BIOS. I don't
    have a dual-processor or a PWS200i, but I have shadowing enabled, and I
    hadn't noticed any particular problems in 1.2.?, 1.3.20, or 2.0.28. I
hadn't noticed any note about it anywhere either. Where did you see
that? Is it just for dual-processors? I _have_ seen general cautions
    against _caching_ the shadow BIOS.

	Thanks for your answers,

About disabling the shadow BIOS, i read this somewhere in the Debian package
saying that Linux has its own 32 bit cache and require the shadow BIOS to be
disabled.
but i coudn't find the reference again.
