2517.0. "Rare Fords?" by PGREEN::SACKMANJ (I was dreaming of the past...) Wed May 15 1996 03:10

Maybe this should appear in seen in passing, but then maybe it deserves
its own toppic. see what you think...

M25, last week poodling along in the inside lane the following cars:

    '69 G Ford Cortina 1600E two door,
    '69 G 1600E four door estate
74 Mk I Escort Mexico estate
    '70 Escort Twin Cam
    5 Mk I Escort RS2000's
m reg Capri RS3100 (or 2600, the one with the wierd spoiler)
2 Mk II Escort RS 1800
1 Mk II Escort RS2000 (Zakspeed arches, WIDE wheels/tyres))

All of these cars were immaculate, sporting various ford owners club
stickers. Did something happen this weekend (they may of been heading
    for Brands.

My query is whether ford did actually make any of the first three cars
mentioned in the list? A friend of mine was recently offered a MkI
Mexico estate.. didn't touch it becuase he assumed there weren't any
    made.
Any FORD buffs out there confirm these models?

I also clocked a convoy of Capri's (various models) on Sunday 5 May on the
M62, about 7 in total all looking good.

I figured they were on there way to some sort of bash. It was just before 9am
and they were all doing about 60 in the inside lane.

Kinda brought back a few momories.

I have definitely heard of all of them apart from the Cortina 1600E
estate. Many 'ordinary' Cortinas have been converted to 1600E spec so I
would suspect this may be one of them.

The Escort Mexico was definitely available in Mk1 days using the 1600
crossflow engine. It is the MkII Mexico that is actually quite rare
because it was so overshadowed by the RS2000, or alternatively you
could get a 1600 sport which was much cheaper, so not many were sold.

oh... just re-read the base note and saw the car your mate was offered
was a Mk1 MExico Estate. I'm pretty sure the mexico was never made in
estate form so again the car sounds like a fraud.

    cheers,

2517.46 1600Es and 3 Mex estates?PGREEN::SACKMANJI was dreaming of the past...Thu May 16 1996 16:309
From other sources I have found out that 6 1600E 2 doors were made for
Ford directors, one of which had the 1558 Lotus Twin-Cam engine in it
(it also had air-con; maybe the extra power of the TC was needed to run
    the Air-con!)
3 Mk I Mexico estates were made for directors/publicity. Now if anyone
can supply chassis numbers then maybe that car offer WAS real after
    all.

I doubt very much if any of these specials would be up for Private sale
in your local paper or whateva. Whoever owns them must know there true
value and history and will almost certainly be a member of an owners
club. If they wanted to sell they'd then use the free adverts in the
owners club mag. guaranteeing an audience who knew what it was they
    were selling.

... also, as with the 1600E, plopping a 1600 crossflow engine into an
otherwise standard escort and putting Mexico badges on it was a popular
pastime for many diy mechanics, thus I would bet there are (were) more
dodgy "mexico estates" around than there were genuine ones.

The car up for sale was more than a diy job. There were numerous
differences between a std escort and the "avo" escorts including:
    	'export' body shell (thicker steel)
    	front valance
    	front and rear arches
    	tunnel
    	tougher strut mount points
    	boot floor pan
All of these and others were all incorporated into this 'mexico
    estate'.

From my original note it only leaves the 1600e estate. This one I doubt
was real. Back in those days executives didn't drive around in estate
cars, they didn't have the cred that they do now.

2517.8Special orders ?SEDSWS::BARRETTThu May 16 1996 19:558

My first car was a second(or third or fourth)hand MK2 Cortina GT estate
which was availble to special order from Fords apparantly.I also had
an uncle who worked for Fords and he had an Escort GT estate which he
had from new and I seem to remember was special order only.Possilbly
you could order 1600E Estates to special order ?

I had one of those, it was a damned fine car.

    Seen recently:

    '67/68 Corsair 2000E Estate
    '63 (ish) Prefect/Popular

It's nice to see them out & about. They're more interesting than the
    stuff around these days !

I used to have a Mk 1 Cortina 1500 Deluxe 2dr. (it had the Cigarette
lighter, hence "Deluxe"). Can you remember Crossply tyres ? What fun
    that was !

    Cheers,

A friend has only just sold his 2000GT Corsair - the one with the Shark
nose and the strange V4 engine - it even an original working Radio.
