2426.0. "How do you say 'sorry'? DO you?" by REOSV0::ROEM () Fri Jun 30 1995 14:13

    re 2425.39 by IOSG::MITCHELLE

    Interesting point Elaine,

    > I find that if someone else does something wrong - and acknowledges it -
    > by a wave or something like that,

    I've often (well, sometimes) wondered how an intended wave of apology
    or *self* ridicule might be perceived by the recipient. What does the
    panel think are acceptable forms of gestures for defusing rather than
    escalating a potential road-rage situation?

    I'm with Elaine.

    It's hard to get annoyed if someone says 'oops, sorry'.

    I think the apologetic wave of the hand does wonders. It can certainly
    cool a situation down to let someone know that you're aware that you
    screwed up or acted out of order.

    Chris.
2426.3How do you wave?WOTVAX::stus.olo.dec.com::HATTOSIts Simple, but it's not easyFri Jun 30 1995 16:316
Apologise for what? I wasn't wrong!

:*>

PS the wave does it for me - I might still think they're prats but I don't swear
and curse.
2426.4Shoot YourselfFLEX7::WIGGLESWORTHFri Jun 30 1995 17:212
       Clearly shoot yourself in the side of the head - not necessarily
       with a real gun.

    Could be missconstrued as a gesture indicating that the offending
    driver should shoot himself in the head.

    Use a real gun and do the job properly leaving the offending driver
    with no doubt in his mind that you were indeed very sorry.

    :-}

    You could of course raise you hand (palm towards window) and smile,
    then forget about the incident.

2426.6"What world outside? "IOSG::MITCHELLEPigs all fed and watered, and ready to flyFri Jun 30 1995 18:548
If people make a genuine mistake - and are prepared to admit it, even if you've
hooted at them, they often just wave, (or in one instance recently I was close
enough to see him mouthing his appology!) I think the problem is were the
annoyance is someone either deliberately trying to 'gain advantage' - they have
no intention of doing anything which may placate the person they have just
inconvienienced, or people so unaware of the outside world that they don't even
seem to know that it is they who are being hooted at! (As in Jasper Carrots
"Never been in an accident - but seen hundreds" sketch :-) )

    On the occassions when I've made an honest mistake, I find a whole bunch
    of Carnations rather than the single bloom can help to placate the
    offended driver.

    If this fails, I just boot the accelerator and get the hell outa there
    %^)

    .4 and .5 highlighted exactly my point.

    Can a wave be misconstrued?

    .7 Where do you put the whole bunch? :-)

    Peaceful driving home, folks....
