2402.0. "octane? What octane?" by SAC::KERRISON_G (Open air Martini drinker) Fri Apr 07 1995 15:06

	Hello,

I'm interested/confused about octane rating standards....

I know (in the UK) what my vehicles require to run on - and I
think I know that in the UK we use the RON measurement.

	98RON =supergreen, and 4 star
	95RON =normal unleaded

In one of my vehicles owners guides it says...

unleaded premium grade fuel DIN 51 607, minimum octane number
	95(RM) and 85(MM) or

leaded(?) premium grade fuel DIN 51 600, minimum octane number
	98(RM) and 88(MM).

hmmm. does RM equate to RON? whats this MM stuff?

AND, what standard of measurement is used in the USA? is it either
of these? if not what is it and how does it compare?

A friend of mine in the USA says they have 3 types of fuel available
	93, 89, and 87 octane...???

	thanks

	Gary

I believe the octane ratings of fuel have been steadily declining over
the last 10 years because of the environmental/polution aspects.
The effect it has is to cause 'pinking' where the timing has to be
changed on the car to compensate. the classic for this was the Austin
Maestro/Metro 1300 cc series A+ engines prior to unleaded heads being
    fitted.

Maybe ELF produced some special mix for Benetton and Williams 2 weeks
ago that would assist most cars performance and get rid of the pinking!

Very interesting section in Top Gear on Benzine (?) and it's danger to
children, and the fact some places in the States have had to shut
    adjacent playground to garages.

Tesco in the UK are apparently stopping use of super-unleaded (which
has very high Benzine) and introducing low-benzine unleaded in all the
    stores over the year.

    Yes I saw that too.

I reckon the oil companies have known about this for a loooooong time.
    I'll tell you why.

11 years ago, before I worked for DEC, the company I worked for used a
petrol fleet card. The nearest garage to the office which accepted it
was a Shell garage. Now one day I roll up in my Cavalier - which I had
just had converted to run on unleaded ( remeber the days when the ONE
unleaded pump was next to the diesel pump for the trucks? Anyway..) -
to fill up with my first tankful of unleaded.

I jumped out of the car to be greeted by a very nice looking lady in a
white lab coat. 'We're just conducting a survey into fumes emitted from
unleaded petrol pumps' says she, 'Would you mind if I stick this tube
up your nose to measure it?' I agreed and filled up my car with a tube
under my nose contacted to a very impressive machine, which flashed a
red light within 5 seconds of me starting the fill up. 'Ooh that looks
worrying' says I, looking over her shoulder at the machine. 'Don't
worry that just tells me its working ok' says she.

Now I didn't push this, but the lamp was marked 'Overlimit', not
    'Working OK'.

So like I said I think they've known for years... it's just another
case of the oil companies ripping us of, because our government won't
    regulate them.

As soon as my local Tesco starts to sell low-benzine unleaded, I will
buy it. Not because I am a conservationist do-gooder, but because I
remember a red flashing light marked 'Overlimit'

I return you to our regular programming....
