2389.0. "FIAT barchetta" by KERNEL::SCHOFIELDL () Thu Mar 16 1995 15:22

I have seen a few articles on the new FIAT Barchetta. It looks
interesting. There does seem to be some confusion about when (and if)
it will be on sale in the good 'ole UK.

It's a two seater convertable sports car, 1.8 16v 130Bhp and is set to
make the lives of the MX-5, MGF, CRX and Quantum 2+2 a little bit more
    difficult.

Expected price is only about 14,000 pounds! Anyone know any more about
it like if it will be on sale here in right hand drive etc..?

I read something about this recently. It's only available in LHD, that
    much I can remember...

    Cheers, Laurie.

To me, it looks far more like an MG than the MGF does. I wouldn't say no if
someone left one in my drive...

To these (bleary) eyes, it looks much prettier than the MGF. Looks a bit like
a grown up "Capuccino", only better looking front and rear.

Motoring News say the Barchetta will only be available in LHD form.

Still, all you 'purists' will hate it as it has FWD! :^)

Apparantly one will be road tested on Top Gear on BBC 2 next week.

    Keep your eyes peeled!

I saw the Barchetta at the Geneva motor show - very nice, but rather
small, and with tiny boot space.

For us in Switzerland it will be about 35K Swiss Francs ( divide by 2
to get pounds). Interersting in comparison with the MG-F, at Sfr 37K.
Both cars look the same size.

Both cars look like MX5 competitors. The real cabriolet of the show was
the Alfa - a bit bigger than the others and a lot of style
    (Pinninfarina !)

The Fiat Coupe is available with one 4 cylinder 2 litre 16 valve engine
    with or without turbo charger.

The Alfa Romeo GTV is available with a selection of 4 or 6cyl, single or
twin spark, turbocahrged or n/a. I haven't seen diesel mentionned.

I'll see what the glossies say ...

The April issue of Top Gear magazine has a short article on the Fiat barchetta.
The front end reminds me a little of the Fiat 850 although the headlights look a
bit odd.

I asked my local Fiat dealer if they could arrange a test drive
    for me..."simple" they replied..."just give me 2000 non-refundable
deposit and we will order one for you"...no test drives,no glossies!

    Been there, done that, before.

I was 'offered' 100 pounds discount ( for CASH ) on a new car.

I hope you told him what to do. I didn't at the time but I wished I
    had done now.

Saw one of 'em in Brussels a few months ago, I didn't know what it was
at the time, but it was attracting a lot of attention from passing
pedestrians. One of the best looking cars to emerge in a long time.

The Top Gear review said that it didn't handle very well on twisty
country lanes...wonder exactly how bad it is; s'pose it depends what
    you want the car for.

Hate to be a git.....but....i'm really thinking of buying a Fiat
Barchetta in July 1996. I live in Bruxelles but intend to buy it in
England. Could someone tell me if I have to order the thing and, if so,
how long would I have to wait till it arrives ???

I'd also appreciate all reviews and oppinions possible.

    Cheers, Shaun.

Love to be a git....the Barchetta is ordered and will arrive in the
first week of August (well, thats what the man said!). I've gone for a
metalic green colour and black leather interior (i.e comfort pack).

I'll let you know hoe it drives ;^&)

    Shaun.
