2317.0. "BATHURST, The BIG one" by WARNUT::ALLEN (It works better if you screw it in..) Thu Sep 29 1994 13:27

    Calling all Oz readers.

Can anyone post info on this weekends BIG race. In the last couple of
years info has been sparse at best, yet this for me is still the
biggest saloon car race in the world.

I guess if the Brock Mezera car lasts it must be favourite, though I'd
love to see the old man Dick Johnson up there spraying the Champagne.

    Mike

p.s. anyone know if any of the satellite channels are going to show
more than 10 mins this year??

2317.2FIRST FALCON WIN SINCE 81!VEGMIT::LAXTONTue Oct 04 1994 05:5330
Dick Johnson and John Bowe took the honours in a Ford Falcon. The last
30 laps were like a sprint with John Bowe dicing with Brocks 2nd car driven by
rookie David Lowndes (sp?) and Brad Jones. Great stuff! Lowndes passed Bowe
around the OUTSIDE at GTX but then lost the lead after almost being hit by a
slower car at the end of conrod. Perkins came in third.
Brock had a massive lose at the top of the mountain about an hour from
the end, (about the same place where Bartlett rolled in the comaro a few years
back if you remember) he clipped a white line and spun into the wall at about
200K, no injuries. Seton and Jones falcons both retired with engine problems.
Wayne Gardner ran into the wall coming into the cutting after spinning on
somebodies oil (maybe his own).
The first 2 hours were wet but with no major incidents, scary watching
these big falcons and commodores sliding across the top of skyline passing
slower cars at over 200k! The in-car camera shots were spectacular again
including Dick Johnson telling the audience a joke while screaming down conrod.
Some of you may not be aware but the in-car camera technology which is used in
todays F1, Indycar, NASCAR etc was developed by the channel 7 boys here in OZ
particularly for Bathurst.
The race was marred by the death of privateer Don Watson in Fridays
practice on only his second lap. He went straight ahead at Caltex chase at
approx 260k after blowing a tyre when a disk shattered, hit a tyre wall and
flipped onto his roof.

I must admit I missed some of the action during the race as I was drinking beer
and playing with the Scalextric all day.

Only a month before the Adelaide GP! Maybe I wont put the Scalextric away just
yet,

Phil.

YES!! Dick Johnson wins! I bet his smile went right across the state!

Phil, thanks for the report. I can only hope that some satellite
channel or other will have picked it up and show us some of the
footage. The last couple of years have seemed bare without the annual
pilgramage to the small screen. A few years back I used to have a mate
in OZ who used to ship the Channel 7 telecast to me, stupid idiot
    emigrated to the US!
