2309.0. "Ignition problems with CAVALIER SRi" by FORTY2::SHARPE () Wed Sep 07 1994 18:35

I have actually just phoned the RAC to come and sort my car out!!

The car is a 1986 C Reg Cavalier 1.8 SRi.

When you turn the key in the ignition, the starter motor doesn't turn
and all you here is the fuel pump, at the rear of the car, starting up.

It's definately not a flat battery as my alarm switches on and off no
problem.

What has been happening is the car will eventually start after
resetting the key from ignition to off several times but now
there's just nothing!!!

I would of said it was the starter motor but previous to this afternoon
the car did always eventually start, with a slow whurring noise and then
the engine would fire, no problem!!

Anyone else had anything like this happen????????????????????

Greatful for all suggestions???

    Dodgy starter motor ..?

I've had something similar to your worries on an escort I used to have.
If the starter motor is clicking, or showing some signs of life when
you turn the key then it's a safe bet that the starter motor needs
replacing. I've found when they go, they go .. no warning.

If on the other hand theres absolutely nothing coming from the starter
motor check all the wiring for breaks or just general bad connections.
It might even just be the connection needs cleaning up.

    Hope this helps.

Showz how much work you lot are doing!!!

The kind RAC man (who was a bit grumpy!) came and sorted me car out.
Well got it started anyway. It was in need of a jump and despit what
I originally thought it seems that it was the battery.

I took the car down to Doubles Garage(Spencers Wood, Reading) and
a really nice young chap called Ashley drop tested the battery.
The battery didn't even have enough energy to complete the test,
well it has been in the car for 8 years(I believe!).

Wasn't going to pay the 75.00 Doubles wanted for a Bosch battery
and wouldn't touch a Kwik Fit (1 year guarntee) battery with a barge
poll.

So I went down to the freindly Vauxhall dealer and picked up an
AC DELCO maintenance free battery for 38.00. Put it in when I got
home and so farit seems to have solved the whole problem.

What do you expect if you buy a Ford car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES the parts are cheap...
...BUT that's cos they only last two minutes before
they need replacing again!!
